sheesh.. honestly wouldn’t be surprised if all these companies trying to ride the WFH train change their mind in a year or so and employees getting screwed. I accepted a position that’s fully remote for a company who has never offered it until recently and it’s a bit worrisome.

15% cut and a google employee earns an avergae of $10k to $15k a month, so theyll chop off $1500 to $2250 which these employees will end up paying for gas ,time wasted "commuting, lunch time, rest .. etc etc " so this is very normal for these huge companies.

peeps just like to make a big deal out of it

Isn't working from home just demonstrating to the boss how easily you can be replaced by an Indian bodybuilding miscer for pennies on the dollar?

The thing about this is that it mirrors government pay, which is a base flat rate and then high COL areas you get a boost. Now private industry has mirrored that instead of paying based on skill. All these WFH people are saying oh they shouldnt have to come into work if they can deliver the same product as they do in office but the company has decided to not pay them based on quality or output but on where they live, so holding back and retaining more profit on them if they live in the boondocks.

These people should be very worried in the future. We were just told nobody wants to work and its an employees market, blah blah blah but big tech just came and cucked them hard and according to the article all of them are doing it so not like you can just jump ship to a different company. The overlords can downsize their offices AND reduce your salary, THEY save money on both sides while you pay for your own electricity, space for your home office ect.

Then consider the mental effects of all of these people never leaving their houses and not getting as much social interaction and it will get worse when the company drops them for someone overseas.

Eh, I’ll side with Google on this one. The pay is proportional to where the employee is residing. Someone who lives in Stamford has a lower cost of living than someone in Manhattan. As long as the pay is proportional to the cost of living of what they were making in Manhattan then this is a non-issue.

Fiancé works for giant insurance company and took a 15% cut while working from home for a year. It wasn't that big of a deal, but she is back in the office now.

From a macroeconomic perspective, if more companies move offshore, that leaves the labor at home without jobs. No jobs, the citizens start to become poor. Citizens start to clamor for politicians that will support protectionist policies. Offshoring becomes illegal.

The only people that need be worried are city workers whose jobs could be moved out of state to a cheaper cost of living locations like Kansas.

Does the employee in manhattan produce more?

WFHcels say that it shouldnt matter if they are in the office or where they are as long as their work is the same. THey also say their quality of work is much better than foreigners so they arent worried their job would be axed. But the company only pays on location not quality of work.....

Really? look at outsourced jobs from 2000s compared to today. Have they increased or decreased?

Im with google on this one. Who the fuk makes permanent decisions based off a temporary lockdown?

Get back to work slackers
-Some people say good things come to those who wait, truth is, good things come to those who work..... who work later.....who work harder...... who are willing to go further than anyone else to get them. If you're waiting for good things to come to you, you'll be waiting for a pretty long time.

Yehhhh that was mostly me being facetious

Although my current company has an employee who traveled to India during the pandemic and wasn't able to come back, so he's working remotely from his parent's place there while still being under the payroll etc of a Canadian company. But I don't know the specifics of how it's all set up, and that still wouldn't address the issue of local workers.

Maybe Indian companies will begin outsourcing jobs here

it makes sense. why?

cuz if u have employeses in bum**** nowhere - why are you pay8ing them $100k? when someone from mthat area will work easily for $80k? When u work remote, u now compete with others who work remote.

it's simple economics.

The reason u get paid a lot is because u agree to deal with traffic, dressing up, etc. to come in to work. That means u only compete with others in ur area for that job.

and yeah. outsourcinmg to cheaper areas/countries was all the rage but was a complete disaster. The cheaper workers offshore were god awful, time difference and delivered such garbage work - cuz those indian comapnies literally hire the cheapest workers possible with fake resumes.
Ur livign expense are super low now so shouldn't affect u. Or agree to come in 2x a week and save ur salary.

Company pays on skills (hard and soft skills) and proportionally adjust based on location.

Why do you think people in San Francisco get paid more than people in Omaha? It’s because housing, food, utilities, are more expensive in San Francisco than in Omaha. If companies didn’t adjust their salaries while wanting people to be a commutable distance to the office, then people wouldn’t work at those companies because it would not be worth their time.

So if the job pays a $100k as a baseline, then there will be a location factor associated based on cost of living. So that $100k is equivalent to $200k in San Francisco, but $95k in Omaha. However, the purchasing power is about equal for both the person in SF and Omaha.
