Google has a list of prospects so long they could replace their global 100,000+ person team 10 times over if they wanted to. Resistance to your tech overlords is futile.

Gotcha. He probably should have figured it wasn’t wise to travel outside the country he resides in, but not a citizen of, when nations are locking down their borders to non-citizens due to Covid.

I’m not sure how they would handle the salary in that situation. If he’s a high performer, I’m sure the company worked something out, especially if he’s a hard to replace SME.

Why are you rooting for the megacorps that give zero fuks about you instead of supporing fellow workers? Is there anything more cucked than that? Shilling for megacorps that are raking in historic profits is the ultimate cuck move.

Obese and a cuck shilling for google, damn you're sad.

What would this do to the increasing cost of commercial properties? Along with so many retail stores shutting down left and centre, I can only speculate that property value will plummet

I like how the resounding sentiment on the misc is to cradle the balls of their tech overlord.

Truth be told, sure, you could move to a lower COL area, and live that way. Anybody wah-wah-ing about the fact that some people can work from home should...Look into a way to switch careers to one that can be worked remotely.

Anybody with half a brain can see that you don't need to be the office for most jobs. Combine that with the fact that not having to pay for all that office real-estate, and the company is saving money in the long run.

And instead of allowing that benefit to also benefit the employee... The company goes "Ah, fuk em, more money for me."

If you looked at that and sided with the company, you're just angry that you have to go into the office.

Ya'll are notorious for looking at why people "shouldn't be able" to do things from the lens of "why you personally can't."

Misc has continued to reveal that they're all angry at anybody who can have things that they don't currently have or feel they can't have. And instead of trying to figure out how to obtain these things... They just seek pleasure in trying to make it worse for others who have what they want, or find joy in when somebody is "brought back to their level."

fuk em
You’re mixing two separate arguments together.

1. It’s not a pay cut. Both people have equivalent purchasing power in both locations. It’s like saying 2/4 is greater than 1/2. They’re both equal to .5.

2. Arguing employees deserve higher wages due to company profits is your second point, and worthy of discussion. A lot of those employees have Stock as part of their compensation package, so they’re most likely sharing in the record profits as well. Now whether, they deserve more stock is certainly an argument to be made.

That’s why De Blasio in New York City is pushing so hard for workers to go back to the office. He sees the cities coffers being depleted because people have the audacity to want to work at home and have a better work/life balance, rather than be tax revenue generators that he can siphon off of.

A lot of these people are the same ones bitching about Google having too much power in general but cheering on Google getting power back.

Do miscers honestly believe that workers are equally as productive in a WFH environment compared to an in-person office environment? I'm not saying the technocrat oligarchs are in the right, I don't think they are, but anyone who is trying to pretend we're all just as productive working in our underwear and waking up 2 minutes before work is just delusional.

Whether it's waiting for someone to reply to a message instead of just standing up to go talk to them at their desk, or the first 5 minutes of every single Zoom meeting with more than 5 people where someone's technology is phucking up and/or the constant Canadian stand-off of "no sorry, you go ahead" whenever two people talk at the same time or, and let's just be honest, the amount of times people are just like "phuck it" and log off at 1600.

All that time adds up, you're never going to convince me that these companies don't at least have a motivation to want to get people back into the office.

The logic behind why a company pays higher wages in large cities is NOT based on the cost of living in the area. It's based on the free market forces of competition in these areas. If I want to hire somebody in San Francisco, I'm hiring from a labor pool where ALL the applicants have higher salary demands. Labor markets start baselining "market rates" for labor based on the competition.

These tech companies are playing along with the "cost of living" reason because it works in their favor as justification for pay cuts, but the cost of living was a zero factor when they hired that worker. During hiring it was just the "market rate". Well the market has changed and it's hard to just do paycuts without a reason.

I’m as productive if not more productive at home. Now, I realize that’s n = 1, but I’m sure out of the 150 million in the labor force, I’m sure I’m not the only one. I’m also sure, that there are people who can’t handle working from home and need constant supervision to get their work done.

My question then, is why are companies hiring people that they can’t trust to get their work done without supervision?

Also, since I can handle working from home, and produce high quality work, why do I need to be in the office because someone else prefers to be in the office? Seems like the best solution is to let the employee choose their preference and be accountable for their production.

Fukking hope this happens in London. So many Londoners have sold up and moved into our little rural coastal towns... pushing house prices up massively for the locals, clogging up our roads etc

I hope they all get called back into the office. Fuk ‘em.

I agree with you brah, I'm several times more productive working from home. Plenty of other people are too. But as you alluded to, that's definitely not the case for everyone.

Why do companies hire incompetent people? Because most people are incompetent. That's why there's one manager for every ten people.

Those same incompetent people who actually need that supervision will always choose the option that is the most convenient to them, not the one which affords them the most productivity.

Cost of living is the root cause…the labor prices in the city are a result of the cost of living. As I mentioned earlier, the job is tied to a baseline salary. Labor competition will adjust the baseline salary, then cost of living will be the multiplier.

i can see why it would be viewed that way. I could explain a different way. During getting hired and doing salary negotiations you don't agree to a salary and then get a +15% cost of living factor added based on San Francisco rates. If hiring that same position in Kansas would they negotiate the same salary and then subtract a -15% based on kansas cost of living?

So why when you move away from SF do they only then factor this 15%?

You don't think that has to do with everyone being locked at home and using Amazon's delivery services brah? Or using video streaming more? Or using team sharing tools?

JFC, use critical thinking for like 2 minutes. Do you think Amazon's employees (the majority of whom are warehouse drones who are not WFH btw) have become 200% more productive this year and that's why they doubled profits or do you think that maybe, just maybe, the changing circumstances in the world lined up perfectly with the services provided by these companies who were in a perfect place to take advantage?

On the real; it really depends. I'm not a ridiculously productive worker in office. I'd say I rank "above average", but have zero desire to be "employee of the month material." I'll tell you why;

In the office, you can't ever have a moment where you "aren't busy." You aren't allowed to sit there and twiddle your thumbs while you await additional workload (and you may certainly be "voluntold" to do additional work). Many employees do not see a benefit in doing work to be rewarded with additional work (and so they spread their workload more evenly through the day so as to prevent themselves from ever appearing to be in need of additional work). Most offices will typically have a group that ranges from ridiculously productive to unproductive and very often these people will have somewhat similar salaries or wages as they are in the same position.

In a WFH environment, your reward for finishing your work is additional free time and the ability to relax a little more. You are able to handle your workload at a pace that is comfortable, and you can reward yourself with free time by completing your workload early. You are also likely to be given more work, but that will balance out because it can still be done at your behest. Additionally, you are more likely to be willing to continue to work beyond your scheduled hours because your commute home is already covered. I learned very late that most people in the office will complain until you're dead about how busy they are but are also doing that specifically to prevent themselves from being awarded additional work because they have efficiently handled their workload. It was too late for me because by the time I realized, I was already handling several different additional work streams from additional departments without additional pay.

Even if your workload adjusts while you are WFH you are still able to actively prioritize what needs to be completed.

Of course, this is specifically for "volume based" positions in which the level of work you do is based solely on the level or requests for work that are inbound.

Bottom line is such that it actually probably serves to bring the employees that may have been performing poorly UP, and so theoretically speaking, you're probably going to see that yes, it's more productive across the board.

Again, the calculation really boils down to this: why should you do additional work to appease a company that will -shocker- cut your pay by 15% for a condition that you didn't create... And reward you with additional work? Keep in mind, at the same time they're doing this they are profiting at ridiculous rates.

Good.

You know how many people I saw at breweries at with computers the start of the pandemic “working” from home.

Still goes on.

Post is real af. Mindblown half of misc is siding with our corporate overlords

I agree with you 100% brah, and I'd reiterate that I'm against companies being able to force their employees back to the office or cut their pay for not doing so (as I've said ITT twice already). The company set the conditions and rewrote the contracts. That's game over. Oh noes is corporate America not able to oppress their drone serfs as hard? Good, phuck em.

All I'm trying to say is that I don't think the average person is more productive at home, the opposite in fact-- and I think companies realize that too, because they are seeing their projects all stagnate most likely. As others have said, if productivity is the same, or only trivially different, it makes sense for companies to keep their workers at home, no overhead, no electricity, no worker's comp for slip and fall bullchit.

Unfortunately, when these workers without a ton of proactiveness are in the office sure, they are spreading their workload over the whole day. When they are at home, they rush through their work in 3 hours and log off. Again, totally agree that a responsible worker is going to be more productive, but the average person is not super responsible, that's my only point.

And I'm sorry, I'm just not going to believe that a delivery, online services, and movies streaming company which doubled its profits during a time when all three of those products became money printing machines, became twice as productive in a single year being their IT guys were suddenly working from home.
