But you can pre-exhaust the muscles using machines and then use compounds.

I dunno...it's not uncommon to see IFBB pros max out the leg extension stack till failure and then head over to do leg press and/or bb squats.

I don't know about you OP, but as I get older I am more conscious of my joints and injuries.

I would rather pre-exhaust the muscle on isolation exercises instead of going too heavy on compounds.

starting with a compound movement then moving to isolations is up there with the biggest bro science and not actually true things
it makes sense as a powerlifter working on the big 3

but if your goal is muscle hypertrophy and aesthetics it literally does not matter and if you have a lagging body part or issues engaging a certain body part its wise to start with isolating that muscle first and getting it to fire correctly.

I split my leg days into Quad day and Posterior day. On quad day I do as many isolated quad movements as I like, then I hit adductors, then i hit calves. On posterior day I do dumbbell rdls because its the best glute builder imo but also hits adductors and hammies, then i just hit hammies, glute medius, then do deep squat pro squats for glute maximus and adductors and then i do adductors directly and calves.

As a natty - I feel a much better pump in quads/glutes if I do squats and then follow up with leg press and leg raises. If I start with press and raises then go to squat, I don't feel I can push as much weight because the isolation exercises wiped me. Another reason is because the compound works core a lot more. If I start with isolation, then switch to compound, my core doesn't get worked as much since I can't move as much weight.

I just do a PPL split, start with compounds then finish off with isolation

What the fk is this "pre-exhausting the muscle" chit? What, so when you're ready to hit the heavy compound lift you're already fatigued and can't reach your full potential?

Nattys should be focusing primarily on their compound lifts. That means warming up and stretching extensively, then working your way up to a max and progressively overloading every time you perform that lift. Sauce ****s can get away with doing 10 different exercises of isolation movements every workout because they're going to grow regardless.

]But why does it matter what lifts you do as long as you apply progressive overload? lmao.

This basically sums up my leg day. I find pre-exhaustion particularly useful in my lower body training.

I start with calves to get the calves nice and loose, then leg extensions to exhaust the quads, then leg curls to exhaust the hamstrings (and work their main function), then onto whatever quad compound I’m doing then finish off with a hip extension/hinge exercise.

And who cares about not being able to push as much weight in compounds? That is actually a bonus. After leg extensions, I can get the same (actually better) quad stimulus with 7-800 lbs leg presses then if I started with leg presses. Likewise, instead of using 315+ for stiff leg deadlifts, I can get away with 225-275 and still get within 1-2 reps of failure each if I do leg curls first.

Lastly, squats never did jack chit for my quads anyway. So warming up with more squats would of accomplished nothing.

Last time I joined a gym I did a few dumbbell things but I was too wary to do squat or DL. I don't know where to start with them without wrecking myself.
