Jailtime/prison is simply a draw on the tax payer and is not showing actual positive outcomes in society. Moderate criminals go in and come out much worse, typically.

As others have said, the "war on drugs" has been a colossal waste of time and resources. The only things it's done is fill the pockets of people who own private prisons.

after working in law enforcement and working in the state prison system prior to that I have clearly seen how ineffective it is. The problem is its used too much. Dangerous people to society need to go to jail to prevent further instances of harm to society like rapists, murderers, people who commit violent assaults, burglars, home invaders. But then you have people like DWI and addicts and petty crimes and white collar crimes need different intervention and programs. Those programs can EASILY cost a lot less on taxpayers considering how much it costs to literally take care of a human being feeding them, medical costs, etc..

Nobody does cancer, and/or can cure cancer by just not doing cancer anymore. You can't get a drug addiction without doing drugs, but you can get cancer without doing anything that even technically causes cancer. Non smokers get lung cancer, but you aren't going to be diagnosed with a coke addiction when you haven't even done it. I've known tons of addicts, many in my family. When they were younger they were all about finding something to make them feel high, and most of them it was a progression and took them a long time. Most thought they were cool and better than everyone else because they were druggies. Caught up to most of them. Some grew up, but a lot of them had severe consequences. Some, just made mistake while they were high that took them a long time, if ever at all to get out of, while some fried their brains or other organs and suffered greatly. One girl I knew started gaining weight after HS and she had access to diet drugs and burned out her pancreas and damaged her other organs. Took it ten years of suffering to kill her. That is the ugly side, which needs to be taught. Lost a lot of people to it, and I can't stand those who try to sugar coat it or make excuses for it because that's called enabling.
