Most good songs were written by stone cold sober Swedish ghost writers who just have a knack for manipulating human psychology in music form

As a songwriter, I'd say that some of the best lyrics or ideas for songs come from being high or drunk. When I'm actually writing the song, however, I'm sober. Alcohol, weed, opiates, even psychedelics...they can all help ideas come to you. Uppers, however, typically don't help with chit.

I think most write them sober, but think of the song when high/drunk.

This.

Most of the good rock bands were heavy H users. I can guarantee you they wrote when they were high.

Kiss is a band that never did drugs, and they suck imo

My take?

I do agree thatsometimesbeing a bit high (pick your poison)canremove a creative barrier and allow one to think/write outside the box andmaybecome up with a clever line or two but that's about it.
But, depending on how high one gets, much of the time it can turn out to be just incoherent mental masturbation and is not the masterpiece we think it may be.
Admittedly, I've done a lot of writing with a Sam Adams or Crown Royal to help loosen up my lyrical thought process.

As mentioned earlier, a good song (lyrically speaking) is pure subjectivity.
What's good writing to one person can be perceived as vapid drivel to another.
Being an old bird I'm VERY particular about what I like and current music doesn't work for me.....I do have generational preference.

I'm 74 and have been a rhythm guitarist/song writer since the mid 70's.
My sig link is my writing style and I know I'll never have any mass appeal.
But, I don't give a shvt because song writing is mycreative therapy....not something I do to meet external expectations.
It's just what I do.

To each their own song writing process.

Have a great weekend everyone....

Bill Hicks did a funny bit on it.

Of course they were mostly under the influence. As a musician myself weed helps get the creative juices flowing when there’s an instrument in your hand.

i can imagine if you're a musician noodling around trying to create a song, getting drunk or high would put you in a unique headspace to bring out songs.
This is point on. Think about how it hits you when just listening. Now imagining the other side of it it’s even multiplied. Whoever the miscer that said most good songs were written sober is waaaaay off. Unless their ‘good songs’ are Kpop or something similar.

Bill hicks had a comedy bit that said

“You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight. Take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause you know what, the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years were rrreal ****ing high on drugs. The Beatles were so ****ing high they let Ringo sing a few tunes.”
