depends on style but if you want the classic moto style with the lapels and belt then I consider the 3.1 Phillip Lim the gold standard. Gosling apparently has one and it looks better the more you wear it and it conforms to your body shape like leather boots do

Schott is the original, the one that Marlon Brando wore in the wild one. Ramones also wore it, albeit 2 sizes too small.





Save yourself some money - Go try schotts brand new for sizing, then go buy an old one from Japan via ebay with the same size. Those are made in the 90s, but are way more durable than the chitty newly made ones.

Keep in mind that these are meant to be worn as tight as possible. Schotts have massive arms that are not fitting at all though, although the rest fits nicely, as its a motorcycle jacket first, and fashion jacket second.

If you want to buy for fashion, then saint lauren is the gold standard, but it costs roughly 7x more than a schott.

The third and best option is custom measured and made. You can get custom leather leathers like bison or kangaroo. It'll be really fitting, and you can customise it anyway you want. Have a look at your local MC shop. Chances are, they can do a better leather for a cheaper price than the above 2. Do check reviews first.

Your leathers should only come in 2 types - full grain or top grain. Anything else, especially "genuine leather" is just rubbish grade. Full grain is heavy AF, will take years to break in, and will be ultra tough, but durable. Top grain is exponentially lighter, but will last 10 years max. If you catch it on anything, expect it to rip, and you'll have to throw it away. Scratches on full grain add to its character. If you get some insane leather like bison or kangaroo, its pretty much indestructible. The best pieces should have at least very faint scars or marks to show that its real top grain. It SHOULDN'T be too perfect - if it is, question the authencity of it.

The back piece of leather should be one massive piece like the schott ones. The chitty ones are cut into 2 down the middle, as they're not using the prime pieces, but chitty offcuts.

Keep in mind DR(double rider) style is more suited for skinny people. If you go to the gym enough and have a stocky frame, it just looks bad. Also, you can't match DR to a lot of shoes, it has to be dark shoes, or you'll look like a clown. It also requires by far, the best and tightest fit, so you have to suffer for fashion. Cafe racer is the best, it goes with everything, from business shirts to ultra casual, and will look good regardless. Bomber is a more casual look, but you'll need to replace the elastic eventually, so that's a big downside. Wool flight jacket is the coolest looking, but the least durable. The wool inside can only be cleaned a number of times before you have to throw it out.

Enjoy the break-in. It's something meant to be savoured rather than rushed. You'll be holding your jacket in one hand 3 years down the track, and thinking back at the first day you bought it, and you could stand it up straight. Its something that follows you for a long time.

Think carefully, and take your time. It's very expensive, but will last you forever.

If you're young or have a babyface, you'll look funny in a leather jacket. Having a custom made one sounds awesome though

Nowhere. It its that price, its chit. Standard leathers (steer, cow) should be around 700-1000, and exotic (bison, kangaroo) should be 900-1200. The point is, its still cheaper than a brand new schott (for non-exotic), but custom made and measured.

Don't just walk into the first motorcycle shop and buy from them. Have a look at what they've made. I live in a relatively large western city, and there's only 2 shops here that do it, one chit, one good. If there's none that are satisfactory, get a second hand schott.

Under 500 would be a second hand schott, which is still more durable, recognisable and resellable than any other brand out there, but you need to go try it brand new at their stores to get sizing, and also, the upper arms do look like absolute chit. Schott does offer tailoring if you send the jacket to them I think, so you can get the massive sleeves re-sized.

Great post, I can tell you did some research and got experience. I do have a question, the perfect you post, do you absolutely have to be skinny? You can't get away with wearing if you have a slim waste? What about just getting it custom?

Leather jackets definitely aren't for bloated or muscular dudes. It's why I haven't gotten into leather jackets.

It says "Genuine leather" - avoid like the plague. Accept only top grain or full grain. Genuine leather is leather offcuts and shavings glued together in a sheet, and made to look like leather.Its just not flattering, and depends how you style it. Arnie in T2 looked really good, but looks dated compared to fashion trends today. Most fashion stuff today are designed for skinny bodies either way, and its hard for built people to look good in them. They try to emphasise sleekness. The best clothes for someone who is fit is just a really nice fitting t-shirt, followed by shirts. Honestly, the best investment you can make for your wardrobe professionally is tailored shirts and suits. Work shirts look bad on skinny people, as it shows how small they are, and isn't sleek.

Either way, perfectos/DRs are hard to style anyway, unless you go out in boots and jeans everyday, which you might do in your 20s, but once you get older, it just becomes a pain.
