engineer brahs gtfih (thinking of job change)
approaching 3 years of my first engineering job.
salary- 48k + employer pays full health insurance (small firm)
drive - 5 minutes from home
10 vacation days per year + 5 sick.
i think i am being underpaid as i approach 3 years. i took my base salary of 45k when i started because i had no EXP.
how did you guys progress through the industry and salary?

OP do you live in rural alabama?
I'd suggest looking for another job as soon as possible. Don't quit your current job, but definitely start exploring different options. Update your resume, and brush up for interviews. Btw, are you learning anything? Do you see a future for yourself at this job--meaning, is there progression? Has your skillset improved and will it keep improving? sometimes this is more important than pay.

Severely underpaid but free health insurance is a big plus. I would start looking around. I spent the first 12 years of my career changing jobs every 2-4 years. It's the fastest way to boost your salary.

I dont have plans on getting either lol, but would be happier if i was in the 65-70k range.

48 seems very low for EE with 3 years.
start updating your resume and looking elsewhere
bigger company going to have more red tape and prob do less original design work but you put in your time at a small place for experience. if you get an offer elsewhere and really like your place you can always ask them to match take it or leave it

Mech E here, started 7 years ago at 45k myself (non engineer title using engineering principals) and am sitting at 100k (mech E lead) now at the same place. Im in NJ so its a bit different but I think you are being underpaid still overall. Id start looking for other jobs, even if you negotiate a raise it seems that your current job just sucks in the compensation department.

You're underpaid. Ask to have a chat with your boss about your career. He'll know what's up. Companies only give raises if they think they're going to lose you or if they think you are unhappy about your pay. They don't voluntarily increase their payroll. You have to say something, or alternately, get a job offer elsewhere which they can match or which you can take. Just sitting in your cubicle doing your job isn't going to automatically result in annual raises. If you have a yearly review, that's a good time to bring up issues like these. If you have an exceptional review, it's pretty hard to rebuff you asking for a raise, especially as we enter into a period of hyperinflation under this Clownworld administration.

I spent five years with one company right out of school and got a 3% raise in that time, but I had a great mentor and was accumulating experience
Started hopping companies in the fifth year, technically worked for four companies in that 12-month period, increased my wage by 50%
Incorporated a company last year and started working as a consultant
This year I hopped back to the company I started with and am making legit 2x the base rate they were paying two years earlier (100% srs)

Started at $42k now at $138k.
It depends on location and also the kind of company. You can't expect to get paid the same salary as a 20000 employee multinational company as a small mom and pop company of less than 10 people.

You should be in the 60-65k range so I’d have a chat with my boss and if he’s not willing to increase you should be ready to leave

In 2017 I made 60k base starting out in a mcol florida city. 4 years in I'm 92k base, like 103k total comp. 19.5 days vacation. Going to be 26 days vacation come this March.
