Used to have a dog that needed that done whenever we traveled. For some reason his anal glands got nasty any time he took a car ride for more than an hour or two. The weird thing was he loved to ride in the car (currently have 2 dogs that do not like to ride in the car). He was a Jack Russell.

We have a dachshund that I take once a month to have her anal glands expressed. The smell is absolutely disgusting.

The best $20 we spend per month.

Wild dogs don't eat canned Indian food and kibble
my pug had really bad seasonal allergies, and would also need to get his glands expressed every 2-3 months and some times they would be impacted. We opted to have them removed altogether. He never suffered from allergies again.

You haven't lived if you've never been knuckle deep in a pitty's angus while jamming out to this tune.

Jfl.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

Is it just me -- or when the doctor introduces himself, "Hello! I'm Dr. James and today we're talking about anal glands..." .. in that moment when he says anal glands, does the dog start to look fearful? Does it know what's coming?

I don't remember dogs having these kinds of issues when I was a kid 20+ years ago. We hardly ever took our dogs to the vet and they were fine. They all lived to be 15+ years old. These days it's so common to hear people talk about all the issues their pets have
I think some of this has to do with - back in the day if the dog started scooting around on the carpet, instead of running them to the vet to have their anal glands expressed, we'd just grab a broom and start beating the dog and screaming at it to stop. Dogs are smart, they learn fast that an itchy ******* is less of a problem than a beating.

Seems unnecessary. Why do I get the feeling hypochondriac humans are going to cause the devolution of dogs so that they actually require humans to do this for them? If you don't do this, then what? Their angus itches?

some breeds are more prone to it than others. My maltese never had any issues, and my 2 frenchies haven't had any issues. It's also typically a self addressing issue through solid dumps (naturally expresses) or butt scooting.

Will be curious about your moms pup and the allergies!

We need to fly over those backwater tribes and drop crates of Pfizer vaccines down for them, they need our advanced ways of healing and modern science. Also, if they are hungry, we could supplement their diets with hamburgers and french fries with a nice Coca-Cola brand soda for them to wash it all down with. They might also be bored, which is easily solved by giving them all cell phones to stare into hours and hours every day. With their health, a full belly and lack of boredom, they will be living perfect lives.

Thanks for the reminder actually. I think mine has to get this done. Her poop's too soft so the glands don't get emptied properly when she poops sometimes. Not emptying can lead to infection and serious problems, so it's pretty important.
