it takes an open mind to see the coinsidences that is everywhere sometimes its plain to see othertimes you need to really think about why its happening like it is, however theres 100% a reason why
I'm talking sometimes really intricate programming, REALLY as if your just a computer program in a fukin holographic world INTRICATE
piece the clues together, there's your answer
nothing happens by chance its programmed

90% of the time life is great no matter my current financial, professional or relationship situation. Sometimes stressful but stress is healthy, drives you to achieve.
I've heard that we have baseline happiness levels that are biologically pre-set, I think this is true and mine is very high.

Make a daily journal, do it here on bb.com for accountability. Detail your days, what you do, how you feel and such. Take the doctor prescribed medication(s) but also I'd like to see how much of exercise, getting sun, being outside, etc you really are doing. Not saying sunshine is the magic cure for depression, I know it's an imbalance going on inside of you and you absolutely do need help from a medical doctor.
My take, my kid has depression and anxiety, worse last year and getting much better this year. I also have infrequent bouts with depression. Mine is mild enough I have never done anything about it other than weather the one day every other month it hits. I'm more concerned with my kiddo and I'll say, the change from last year to this year is making a huge difference. She's still getting 1/week with a therapist and a bi-monthly with a psychiatrist and is on medication - but the change from being locked down, loss of social interaction and all the bullchit from last year to this year (new school, in person, new friends she gets to talk with), that is making a big change in everything.
In your case, you have direct control over one side of the equation, which is the interaction you have in this world. Are you really making the most of that as you eluded to in your opening statement? Are you?

> mentally well people find life easy and sail through life feeling pretty happy
No, life is a constant struggle with us all. Mentally well people have bad days and have constant trials just like everyone else. Happiness is something you have to fight for and it starts with you yourself. You have to make choices that sting in the short term but bring you happiness is the long run. It's real easy to have bad habits, eat poorly, drink, include toxic people in your life and such -- all of that brings unhappiness to *anyone*, whether they are mentally well or not.
It's not easy for me to get up at 4:30 to work out, to maintain a proper diet, to take care of my health, to make sure to think of others and my family every day. I do it, because it's a better way to live in the long run, though. Everyone needs to make long term good decisions, most people don't. Everyone needs to maintain good relationships with quality people who care for them, most people don't.
Nobody sails through life, that sounds like an excuse to be unhappy and to make chit decisions and blame someone else.
Be strong, be wise and be good to others and yourself. This will require sacrifice on your part and is not sailing anywhere.

I get together 1/week with my old friends who live in Austin, I'm 3hours north of them these days, but these are the guys I went to high school with, went to college with and/or worked with when I was a young man. I'm old now, you don't make friends in life like you were when you were young, so I maintain these relationships because they are important.
We play games, usually start shooting the chit for an hour. Sometimes it's interesting to me, usually in fact, but not always. It's not always about *me*, though. While I am the most important person in my life, you have to give as much as you take in a truly balanced and healthy relationship.

it is like what you were like as a child.
everything was new and exciting, you looked forward to doing things, experiencing things.
part of aging takes the above away. depression is similar in terms that nothing motivates you or evokes a strong response.

Have you had a full hormone panel done to see what your levels look like?
Edit to add- reason I ask is that there are some people who have treatment resistant depression and benefit from TRT
Not saying that’s your answer, but worth looking into if you haven’t tested that aspect of your health

Reply to JUSA: AGAIN if I quote somebody it doesn't let me submit the post.
To an extent, yes. To 100% of what I could be? No, I guess not but that's one thing about the illness (which it absolutely it). It just makes the simple things you listed into Herculean tasks. I just spent 5 weeks abroad and was in the sun for a lot of the time and was also doing my best to exercise.
I do get your point, a lot of people with mild depression possibly do have the ability to 'cure' themselves doing stuff like this. When it gets to the severe end, I think it has more limited potential. But yeah, I don't disagree that people should do all they are capable of to make themselves better. It is very easy to slip into a state where you just kind of give up and i'm getting there now but doing everything you say to get out of one episode of depression is one thing (I have certainly put massive effort to get myself out of it before) but in my case it always comes back and just wears you down over years and years.
I'm sorry about your kid and your own bouts. It's not surprising that Covid has had a massive impact on mental health. I haven't found any decent stats on that impact but would imagine that it has been very significant. Anecdotally I've hear about many people experiencing at least a type of depression because of that chit.
Your second post really answered the question I was asking. Like I say I have completely lost perspective on what life is like for 'normal' people with 'normal' lives. It is tempting to think that they have it really easy but then it seems that a lot of people I know withotu clinical depression/anxiety are actually fairly unhappy. Life is tough for a lot of people I guess, depression or not.

Low test for a male is very horrible, it's something to check whether you're depressed or not. A brief summary: low/no libido, low energy, low enthusiasm, mood swings, irritability and unhappiness. A lot of cross over there with depression.

You need to have long term goals, and chip away at them.
Thats my problem. Things changed and my long term goals i spent years on arent feasible/ economical anymore.
Im completely lost as i cant find anything to fill that void.

- not much money in testosterone therapy
- insurance doesn’t really like to cover it
- poor understanding as far as most GPs are concerned, they don’t study how much it can affect
- it’s much easier to just pump out various SSRIs and other medications
Do your research and request a full blown hormone & thyroid panel. Have them check for total T, free T, SHBG, FSH, LH, cortisol, estradiol, and anything else you are curious about after reading up on it. That way even if your particular doc isn’t up-to-date on treating those issues you will have labs to take to anyone else who may be more knowledgeable. Also, the channel for the video I posted serves as a decent log of one guy’s journey who suffered for a long time so it may be a good resource for you.

The thing is I've had this so long I have completely lost perspective on how life is for mentally well people and I want to knonw. My life is a living hell even though circumstantially things are great (money, relationship, career are all on point).
For those of you that have never suffereed depression is life still a massive struggle at times? Do you have periods where you feel completely joyless and empty? Do you ever think that life isn't worth living? Do you wake up some days and bemoan the fact that you have to face another day.
Having severe clinical depression I envy people who don't have it so much and I think I have this misguided idea that mentally well people find life easy and sail through life feeling pretty happy. But intuitively I know that's stupid.
I do have the very occasional day when the depression disappears and it feels like life on easy mode in comparison.

I can confront and work through life's obstacles with a zeal I simply do not know when I'm suffering clinical depression. I actually love the challenge when I'm not depressed (hence fitness hobby).
When one is clinically depressed as you describe OP, having situational depression from life events is something you'd be thankful to have. In a weird way, I'm ecstatic to feel the kind of emotional pain that comes from life's adversity because I know I'm alive whereas being depressed feels devoid of any life-affirming sensation.
Sounds like you have treatment resistant depression. My antidepressant takes almost 2 months before it begins working, and that's after the agonizing process of trial and error with others that weren't effective/made depression worse/side effects also insufferable.
It's a sadistic game of roulette. Even though Prozac slowly works for me, who's to say it will continue to do so? Then what? Get an amplifier med with another host of negative sides?
Depression is the biggest b1tch because even people with cancer can be happy and want nothing more than to live on and survive and enjoy another breath. Depression makes you feel like there's no choice...but trust me, there is.
Please PM me whenev ya want to talk about it.

Furthermore as I'm sure you've noticed...There are well-intentioned miscers/ppl IRL who suggest the cliche "Hey look on the bright side boyo!" and "Think positive chap!"....You know well they mean well but haven't experienced clinical grade, major depression.
This is a physical illness first and foremost that manifests itself mentally/emotionally/spiritually/etc
In addition to pharmacological treatment, drink the kool aid on psycho-therapeutic interventions. Whatever gets you through this in a healthy way is all that matters until you're back to a state of mind where you can smirk, shake your head and laugh at how silly some of these treatments seem. But hey, if they helped you reach that good point again then so be it!
All that matters is that you find a healthy way to get better.
Your survival is at stake here.

It's amazing. A clear slate everyday. You have to work through any trauma energy you've compiled and also get rid of inflammation from **** lifestyle and you will experience 'going clear.'

It's a lot more than what you suggested though...talk therapy/psychotherapy can help with the traumas and good diet/sleep/exercise are important no matter who you are.
Make no mistake, this is a fight for life.
It's one in which the combatant is essentially poisoned (sabotaged on repeat by a genetic neurochemical imbalance of the brain).
As someone who has been there, the most important step is to find what keeps you alive here and now OP, then continue this fight by building on that with any treatment modalities that give you the best shot at well being.

I don't suffer from the type of depression where medication is necessary to combat the pain. But I'm not the opposite either. I just kinda maintain an emotional equilibrium where I use activities like lifting, excercise, food, video games, music etc. to give me various forms of stimulation. I find myself often unmotivated, complacent, nonchalant, lazy (in terms of putting things off) and happy to just "exist" rather than LIVE, which are different things.

Stop taking all prescriptions. Life isn’t meant to be the bees knees it’s a struggle and you have to work your way out of it. Have faith in God
