Ah, well this is where I think UBI would be better than what we have now. Because at present you can actually get penalized for trying to work and earn money.

Benefit cliffs, aka a well meant, but very stupid feature of public benefit programs.

If people got a flat "per head" payment then there would be no disincentive to work and earn more money. As is earning $1 too much can leave you thousands of dollars worse off in terms of government benefits.

Also we spend a lot of money employing paper pushers to administrate all of the different programs.

If we paid "per head", had single payer healthcare [not necessarily "free" to the end user], and served actually nutritious high quality free meals in the schools for all children I think a lot of things in this country would get much better.

There would no longer be an incentive to NOT marry the parent of your child [more government money] or to have MORE children [more government money] or to work FEWER hours [more government money].

Employers wouldn't be burdened with the cost of health insurance which would be a huge boon to small employers in particular. Employees wouldn't be tied to work because they need the health insurance [more entrepreneurs, more people able to retire].

I know that most miscer see UBI [or negative income tax] and single payer as anti-capitalist, but I sincerely think that the actual outcome would be positive.

That's the point though... Forget supporting a family, if you can't support yourself through your job why do it? I understand there needs to be jobs for teenagers and such but don't expect adults to jump all over $8 an hour gigs. At that kind of money you might even be losing money after factoring in gas and increased caloric requirements as opposed to rotting. No one has any trouble filling jobs in the $30k, which isn't a lot of money btw, and up range around here its just the minimum wage 32 hour a week jobs that go unfilled

Edit: Wizard above me said the same thing but much more concise

This. Especially the latter part. The problem is more systemic than anyone wants to admit.

The issue isnt minimum wage, its far beyond that. It goes well into income inequality and where the wealth is going. We generate way more wealth and resources than we did in the past, however it is not going to most working people.

In general, the average wage, whether or not you are a burger flipper, blue collar worker, even most white collar workers, teachers, union, etc, has not risen much or at all adjusted for inflation, despite increased productivity, increased work hours, increase efficiency, etc.

So where is it going? Its going to the people at the top, and you see this with individuals like Bezos, Musk, etc, but most CEOs and execs in general, making **** tons more money in salary, comps, stock options, etc.

So the price of goods goes up, inflation goes up, wages stay the same (and even decrease with inflation adjusted) and at some point for each person it makes no sense to work. It isnt worth the marginal increase in quality of life between being a bum and being poor or grinding it out to be slightly more than poor.

You see it now we the low unskilled work, but soon, itll be the same for even entry level 40-50k jobs. Why work 40-60hrs a week for 40-50k when you can just hop on the dole and get most of life essentials provided for you?

**** needs to change across the board in how wealth is dispersed to the people that actually produce things.. or people will stop working because it isnt worth it. Dont really have the answer, but this is the problem. Raising the minimum wage does not address the issue because it just makes unskilled labor more attractive than skilled labor, even further reduces the adjusted income for those working jobs slightly above minimum wage.

Why go to college/trade school etc for $15 jobs when you can just flip burgers for the same amount?

From a recent article sourced from MIT the least expensive state is South Dakota:
South Dakota:income has to be more than $26,225, including an estimated $6,551 for housing and $3,246 for food.
So roughly $27K a year is the least they calculate a person can live on, aka $13.50 an hour.

https://thehill.com/changing-america...-in-each-state

That's almost double the current minimum wage.

Why bother jumping through interview hoops when everything is going to shut back down in a month of two?

- required to get vaccinated
- fewer staff/people who are working expected to work harder
- grumpier customers because of pandemic measures/not enough staff
- employers slow to increase wages vs. crazy inflation

So now your job sucks more, you have to work harder, and the benefit to you is also less than before because inflation is running hot.

It isn't great on employers either. Some employers can pay a higher wage and just deal with lower profits. But some employers are getting a double whammy of higher labor costs + higher material costs for a business that didn't have a fat margin to start with.

Around here if you can't afford a place you just live with your parents. I know people in the town where I went to high school that their entire plan is to live with their parents until they die and then take the house over.

Looking for a way out of my job, srs. Thinking about homesteading.

All these morons riding the gravy train now are gonna be fuuuuuuukt next year. It'll be a campaign issue, and probably help usher in more democrats making more promises. I don't see a good outcome from here, just want to GTFO before things escalate.

Companies are hiring underqualified people and willing to train so it's a great time to get your foot in the door and break out of the crap you were in before. Things will go back to normal and you'll be kicking yourself for not taking advantage of this. Not only that but once you have been unemployed for an extended period of time, even your past experience will be considered irrelevant and in fact, most people who have been unemployed for over 6 months take a lot of adjusting. So things go back and there will be a rush of people trying to get a job and a lot of companies are learning to deal with smaller staff now. Don't sit out of opportunities and then gripe down the road about how the world passed you by.
These people also don't realize that you can easily get your foot in with a new company and rise up a couple of ranks far faster now than you could before. When they are hiring new people in the future, even if you have limited experience, you're an easy choice to manage and train those new people coming in because you know systems. Boom, within less than a year you're a supervisor or manager when it would have taken 3-5 years before now.

Lots of industries are going to have to pivot, but for people willing to work hard it's a big opportunity right now. Just many people are too lazy to take advantage of it and think ahead a year or two.

I don't even think unemployment benefits are the main problem. Those end eventually.

You can qualify for section 8 housing with no income. Some real-estate owners prefer these types of tenants too because it's guaranteed payment. Some large apt complexes around here started accepting section 8 and the quality of people instantly went down in that neighborhood. They now stand on corners asking for cash. It's always someone different, so I'd imagine they keep a schedule at the apt complex and take turns.

I recently read EBT payments are going up. I'd imagine if you have no income you would get max payment/benefits for food.

Once food and housing is covered, what else do you need? Sling drugs for extra cash. Sell EBT money for cash. I see them advertise online for this.

The govt benefits are more competitive than working a low-paying job. It'd depend on cost of living where you live, but I'd imagine anything under $18-20/hr is simply not worth the effort compared to the govt benefits.

It's sad, been bichin about it for decades, but it's only gotten more profitable to not work.
