Thats a weight from an old scale, just to apply pressure. You can get small alligator style clamps (big clothes pegs essentially) which would've been good for this, but I don't have any so I improvise

All my hardware stores are closed in lockdown so I will have to improvise the hinge on the draw bridge aswell. I think I can make it look better than a store bought hinge, which would be easier but it would look out of place.

Update:

I got the battering ram hung today. I used a slip knot in the middle, and tied temporary reef knots up top. They look a bit rough, but when the upper floor level is on it should be hidden. This way I can adjust them in future if need be.




She swings nicely and looks legit, I'm happy with it.




I got the draw bridge made up aswell. It doesn't look like much, but I spent alot of time planning the size and position of the holes. I hope it fits, lol. I used 3mm brass rod and 3mm holes for the pivot, the bridge has 3.5mm holes so it will swing freely.



Time to cut the floor boards for the bridge, it goes much quicker with the stop clamped in, and they will all be the same size.

This is the floating floor for the drawbridge level, it will push forward to bridge the gap when the bridge it down



Next step is the windlass for the draw bridge. I will spend some time designing this before trying to wing it.

I use the drop saw to cut the doweling. Its accurate, and the piece is thick enough not to bend or splinter and long enough that I don't have to get my fingers too close




3.5 mm holes drilled for the 3mm brass axles




10mm hole drilled part way through to embed the screw caps, these will be glued in after I drill the holes for the handles. The handles will be 4mm doweling, each cap will have 6 of them.

I've got all the tools I need for a project like this. I had to drill the 2mm hole in the shaft (below) by hand because my drill press only goes down to 3mm. After lockdown I'm going to buy a keyless chuck that goesalllllthe way down because I'm worth it.

Update:

Handle holes drilled in the caps, handles cut down to size, and I also drilled a hole through the center of the shaft to secure the rope. I filed it down to remove the burr just incase is was sharp enough to cut the rope while winding.

To me, this implies that it's the operator not the tool at fault for failure. In reality, decent tools can make all the difference.

Without my table saw, I couldn't buy these timber profiles in the store without spending a fortune. Without my framing saw theres no way I could cut 16 x 45 degree mitres all perfect at the same length.
Without the drill press I wouldn't be able to drill these holes in a straight line, at the same depth.

I guess what I'm saying is, if all your pieces are accurately made to measure, it all just fits like a puzzle.

Drawbridge is finishing glueing. I have added the eyelets for the rope.
Im going to put some hatches in the siding useing these small hinges I have left over from other projects.




I will make the frame to hold the windlass while I wait for the bridge to dry. Something like this

Alright I got the pulley system worked out;

2x 6mm brass rods with a 2.5mm hole in each, I'll have to drill these by hand. I used the awl to mark my pilot hole




Not too bad! I might polish up the brass a bit and chamfer the edges on top.




These will sit in front of the windlass like this so when the bridge is up they will be level with the eyelets on the end of the bridge
