They are being forced to. Right now most police departments are literally between 50-70% staffing and getting **** for applicants. The whole BLM/defund the police movement has made the vast majority of police dislike the career and only stick with it for a paycheck now.

Its funny because my whole point of warning people to STOP the defund the police thing was because of secondary consequences which would be even worse applicants and worse hires, the real solution was more funding for better training and better pay.

But here we are, with GED level applicants with minor criminal records and no work experience applying to be police officers now.

Most police who could retire did this year, there were record retirement rates tenfold.

Some may but they actually call and interview the ex's. I know plenty of people who work for the department including one who was an investigator and now a member of the recruiting department so i know he does background investigations and they definitely do call and ask hard questions to every ex. I.E. has john smith ever smokes marijuana or done drugs to your knowledge, has he ever stolen anything, did he ever get physical with you or make any threats, did he ever get into any physical altercations with anyone, is there any reason we should find him untrustworthy, etc...

It's one of the biggest disqualifies of applicants.... it shows if people lose their cool and abuse their significant others. If you're a normal adult you shouldn't have a problem with someone calling up an ex making sure you're not hiding anything or didn't beat them. Of course there's ex's that will lie and say all sorts of chit, that's normal. If it's one ex, probably not too big of a deal. If you provided 3 names and all of them say similar chit, yeah probably shouldn't be a cop.

Are domestic issues not related to temperament? It's not about looking into your love life it's about looking into your behavior in general. We also have to take a ton of psych tests and interview with a shrink, it's normally an entire day of psych testing, then waiting a few days to see if you "passed". The shrink will type up a report and send it to the Chief or whoever to approve/deny you.

I can see how this might be beneficial to the PD if used as a deterrent and filtering system - still though i'd think that the PD tends to attract certain personality types anyway, so not sure how effective it is.

I really honestly dont care what my ex's would say im sure theres 0 red flags. But I just have a strong belief in boundaries and setting them for my work life and home life and this one crosses one without question and not only for me but for ex's who I respect not wanting to tell a random police officer on the phone about our history.

If this was for like state CID or federal law enforcement or military clearance thats one thing, but local PD's making 60k a year, its a bit excessive.

If a job has this little regard for your personal life just so they can feel better, then they are going to be the same way about other issues that may come up like forcing you to work a bunch of overtime you dont want to or being completely unreasonable if something happens and throw you under the buss immediately.

If you want concrete boundaries between work and home life, policing just isn't for you. It's not a bad thing, it's just the way it is. I believe in a strong separation between work and home life too, but you have to realize there's going to be some bleed over. Pretending there won't be any is foolish. It's not like these investigators are asking about your past love life, its basically "Any reason you think AgRyan shouldn't be a cop? Did he ever abuse you?" and that's mostly it, maybe another question or two but they're aware calling ex's is weird.

And then you have the other side that constantly complains about how PDs are hiring people who have XYZ history... Some people want more background checks/requirements, some people want less... Can't please everyone.

Also the places doing full background checks like this are probably paying more than $60k. Generally cops will have access to more personal data and be able to ruin more lives via their "clearance" than people in the military with a secret clearance as well.

Well I didnt specify which level of military clearance I would say this level of background would be worth doing.

And 60k depends on the place, in Texas that is decent pay, in New york or California thats podunk population of 2000 pay.

Obviously I get the bleed over I am about to hit my 10 year mark, but I also switched after 6 years from municipal to where I am now because I was sick and tired of surprise 15 hour shifts with 1 hour commuting and surprise spending the night at the police department for a week events and surprise investigations lieutenant going through your lunch back and all the zippers without consent and asking you questions about everything inside.

Like I said thats why I avoid departments now that show red flags of treating employees a certain way. Especially with how policing is in 2021, if the department doesnt have my back then just lol because the public sure doesnt and the city politicians sure dont.

Imagine going through all this and having your entire life closely scrutinized, to become a police offer where you get average pay and have a massive risk of being hung out to dry by the leftie mob for doing your job. No wonder they are under staffed, they aren't really in a position to be asking this of candidates if they still want to have a police force in 10 years.

Same when I applied. There was a 20 page packet that I filled out that asked questions like “have you ever been around anyone that was using illegal drugs” and “have you ever witnessed a felony level crime that you did not report” like breh, what does it matter what I’ve seen OTHER people do?


There were also those questions about relationships, ex girlfriends etc and it’s just way too personal and has no bearing on the job. Then they hire a bunch of soyboys; or sociopaths who are actual criminals but have no problem passing a poly, and complain that “it’s hard to find good cops” No it’s not, you just don’t know what you are doing.
