Is Starbucks secretly a bank?

The Starbucks card can be topped up with cash to spend at any Starbucks, giving users rewards for their purchases.

The total balance on Starbucks cards is over $1.6 billion.

In other words, customers are lending Starbucks $1.6 billion in cash…

at 0% interest!

To put that in perspective, 85% of US banks have less than $1b in total assets.

Starbucks isn’t regulated as a bank because users can’t withdraw their balance as cash.

This means they aren’t effected by various regulations, including the need to hold a large cash balance in case of mass withdrawals.

They are free to spend this loan on whatever they want, such as opening 350+ new stores per quarter.

To top it off, the Starbucks app is the second most used mobile point-of-sale payment platform in the US, sitting between Apple Pay and Google Pay.

No, it's not like holding fiat in a checking or savings account which banks can use to give loans or in some instances invest in real estate/stocks. Starbucks cards are basically like reloadable gift cards connected to a store account that gives you points for purchases. Most places, even places like Wendys or Amazon have loyalty rewards programs like this to encourage spending and offer promos to entice people to put money into those accounts, which I am sure they are not able to withdraw out of once they're deposited

Regardless, $5-10 designer coffees/lattes and ice tea is a bad investment for most people, so it might as well be a 0% loan that Starbucks can use to buy back its own stock or open up new locations.

There isn’t anything special about Starbucks at all lol

The food is actually some of the worst of all time as well - just thinking of their food makes me nauseous

I haven’t equated Starbucks with luxury in over 10 years now. To me it’s synonymous with garbage. I wonder if other ppl still think it’s upscale.

McDonald’s coffee is the best chain coffee on that note

Local roaster is far better and cheaper. If you're ever in KC I highly recommend the Roasterie, it's way better than sbux.

Dude I gather my own herbs for herbal tea, buy my tea (actual green tea) from a trusted farmer. I tell you these taste at least 10 times better than anything you find on starbucks. And again 10 times cheaper.

Many reasons.
But the only reason why i ever go starbucks is when travelling overseas it just feels easier going to a place which may be bad but you want a quick bite/drink without wasting time

This is more so that starbucks are always near a airport, hotel or popular destinations. I wouldn't rely on starbucks, but after a long ride on bus or plane youll really eat anything that doesn't take too much effort to order + these areas are usually all generic international brands

end of day they are just convienient esp when you're not from the area or don't know coffee.

Interesting thought overall in the OP, though I think you could even easily argue that Starbucks is giving negative interest (I assume they run a profit on their sales, and customers have restricted utility with their spending).

i always wondering why companies are hellbent on getting people on rewards programs. in the end its giving away free product. I know its an incentive to spend more at the store and overcome the lost but do bread crumbs like that actually make anyone spend more?

this idea of 0% loan makes a ton of sense but im guessing theres some sort of regulation that restricts them from actually using this money
