Glueing the siding on the bottom level today. The bottom levels will be solid, with no openings.







The hatches in the 2nd and 3rd levels will be about 4 boards wide (35mm). The nails are too long so I will clip the point off with wire cutters. I would clip the point off either way to try and prevent the wood from splitting. It might still split, i will have to be careful

Thanks for the encouragement bro. It's usually around this stage in a project that I start losing motivation, but this time I want to see it right through to the end.

Update:

Change of plans. The nails were just too small to handle, so I had to drill pilot holes, and press the nails in using pliers.




Only aslightsplit on one hole, so not too bad.




One hatch made up, 3 more to go.

Appriciate that MrQuint. I think sharing it with the Misc and getting all the positive feedback has helped to keep me motivated. I can get stuck in the mindset of "oh that looks cool, it's fine the way it is". Then I get distracted and start on something else, never really finishing it to the best of my abilities.

Plus time is not really a factor, with having to self isolate for another 6 days regardless of the covid alert level.

Small update:

Here is the second level going on. It needs pressure from the top to hold it down, and a prop from the bottom to hold the hatch flush. It's not pretty, but if it doesn't fall apart when I pick it up tomorrow then I'll know it's worked.




View of the top with the windlass, pully rope supports and drawbridge eyelets all lined up. This will be stuck hard by tomorrow so I might run the rope then and test it out.

While the otherside glues I laced up the drawbridge. I used basic fishing knots on the eyelets

Wound nice and tight. I'll try and glue the extra rope in place, but woodglue on brass and waxed polyester probably wont stick. One way to find out

I finished off the hatches for the third level. Only a few cracks, the hinges are still tight.




I can tell my framing saw is getting blunt, I have a 18 tpi blade on there so it doesn't last forever.




I will buy a new one after lockdown. Just 2 more weeks

The glue wasn't sticking to the brass as suspected so I tied it off and burned the ends down.




I have the siding for level 3 cut down and hatches made up. It's frustrating slow at this point, only being able to glue one side at a time.




It's like watching glue dry!

The battering ram level will have a chevron pattern using wider timber than the sides (the same as the flooring). It will look something like this, going all the way to the bottom of the second floor.

The top platform is 120mm x 120mm. The wood is 12mm wide so I will need approx 44 blocks.

The walls on the top platform will look something like this (it's probably hard to see with the weights ontop).




I can glue two sides a day allowing for drying time, so I wont bore you with pics of each side. The next update should be the finished product!


In the meantime it's time to clean up. I've oiled down all my metal surfaces; saws, drill, vice, disc sander. I've got my table saw on a mobile platform so I can wheel it round the workshop, this is the sawdust that wasn't picked up by the extractor
