Why does everything have to be so black & white.
Dave Ramsay is giving advice to AVERAGE Americans.
This means ~$60k total household income, living paycheck to paycheck, financing cars, living on credit cards, very little (if any) savings, etc.
So, the advice of, reducing unnecessary expenses, saving money where possible (I'm a millionaire and get my groceries at food outlet stores), DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT finance expensive new cars over 6-7 years, contribute to your 401k / Roth IRA, only go to college for a professional degree which requires college, do everything possible to avoid student loan debt. This is rock solid advice for AVERAGE Americans.....because average people are stupid and lack impulse control, you have to break it down for them and these rules are a fantastic start to avoiding most of the pitfalls average Americans fall into - the worst is probably the cars they can't afford and the "need" to keep up with the Joneses.
The most controversial thing he says is probably the credit cards. But again, you need to remember Dave Ramsay is speaking to average financially illiterate people - the average person literally has no idea what they spend their money on, they can't track it, they don't understand interest rates, they don't understand the long term cost of carrying credit card balance, etc. So the advice of paying off the cards, and then cutting them up is fantastic for these people. Why? Because these people are financially illiterate, the only way to control their spending is to have them physically pay cash / debit as they go. It forces them to only buy things they currently have the money for, it helps them avoid the huge 20-30% interest payments they end up paying on all sorts of junk. The 1-2% cash back or "bonus" from using credit cards is completely lost of them, these are the people who FUND the credit card companies, these are the people who allow ME to get money back, miles, perks for using a credit card because I'm not a financial potato.
TLDR: Average people are stupid, and that's who Dave Ramsay is talking to.

I personally don't follow his financial philosophies other than not financing things for the most part. His advice is made for people who can't survive financially because they have no financial management skills at all.

25% of income on home
15 year fixed
Do not finance or lease cars
Max out retirement
If you follow that you will make it
Simple stuff
Not saying that is how you make the most money or end up with the most
It is just the safest way to get to that point
For every person who leveraged debt and made it you have multiple who did not
(I do not follow Dave ... I have credit cards I PIF, but no debt or auto loans)

Id agree that’s the ideal, but I’m not sure how realistic that is with a 15 year mortgage, unless there was a substantial down payment.

its also great for people who want to waste their youth driving beaters living the safe life, only to finally get to enjoy life at 50 when no one cares what they drive or where they go and by then their back hurts when they go on vacations and they can only handle so much in a day without needing a nap.
Just lol at not living it up while you are young.
(also i max out my retirement plus its matched so im not stupid)

If you'd like to compare net worth and/or income, we can do that too since you're practically Warren Buffet

I've been listening to Dave for that past 30 years, and it is mostly just common sense application to having a better life when you're older.
When you get into your 40's & 50's, you'll be glad you followed his guidance.
