Anyone else do behind the neck press?

One of my favourite upper body movements. Absolutely blows up your upper back/traps/shoulders.

I don't want to hear any bullchit about it hurting your shoulders, either. If guys like Mariusz Pudzianowski can do it, so can you. Fix your sh!tty shoulder mobility.

No. Its a terrible movement for a variety of reasons.

You let your emotions decide your training. I'm only interested in efficacy

I do them seated as well and also agree with the unracking.

What are those reasons?

I mostly let my program decide my training. Thanks, though, bro.

When I was younger I injured myself rushing through a set of beind the neck press because this girl I wanted to bang finally gave the green light, felt a slight pain as I was doing it, ran home and teabagged that sloot.

Woke up the next morning, couldn't move my arm, no upper body lifts for 6 months

Never again.

It also puts an unneeded amount of stress infraspinatus and subscapularis. Even in the rack position, its nearing the fully lengthened range. Now you want to stretch it further and under significant load

Mostly, it doesn't do anything well. Its almost purely an anterior deltoid exercise which very few people need more of.

What are the reasons for doing it other than your weak appeal to authority? (to a guy whose diet staples included chocolate ice cream and snickers bars. srs. look it up if you don't believe me)

I do them now and again. I tend to do them seated on the smith press, just feels safer and easier/more natural.

I do it seated and start it from a rack and not on my traps, so that takes care of that issue pretty easily. Once I get warmed up, I personally have no issues bringing the bar all the way down to my traps. I work on mobility a lot, though.

"It also puts an unneeded amount of stress infraspinatus and subscapularis." I don't think you can necessarily make this as a blanket statement.

Bill Starr hates it too, though:
Now the behind-the-neck press is a horse of another color. I have been lobbying against this exercise since Nixon was in the White House. That movement does place a huge amount of stress on the shoulder joints, as does any behind the neck exercise because the shoulder girdle and joints are not designed to rotate in that manner.

I know what he ate lol. I think it was also a few pounds of bacon for breakfast and then lots of candy.

The Pudz reference was lighthearted and tongue in cheek because most people cite mobility issues as a reason why they don't/can't do the movement. Relax, bro.

Why do I do it? Mostly shoulder health, aesthetics, and keeping things loose. I find they keep everything in my scapula/upper back moving well. I love regular pressing from a standing position, but don't like how it taxes my lower back and affects other movements, so I do seated BTN press instead. Also allows me to move a little bit more weight from point A to point B that traditional pressing, although I largely do lighter sets of 10 after wide grip bench and incline on that day.

This was mostly a troll thread. I wasn't trying to think, brah.

Sure I can. Whether you have the mobility or not, the stress is unnecessary. If something requires a lot of mobility work just to properly perform the movement with a relatively insignificant load, that's a good sign its a chit movement.

How does the movement itself contribute to "shoulder health"?

There are far better and safer options for aesthetics.

Standing pressing is generally not a great idea. I agree. I don't understand what this has to do with BTN pressing.

Nah, only behind the neck wide grip pull ups for me boyo. Went snap city with them rhomboids. Only way I can do wide grips now without electric shock shooting under my scapula.

maybe it's time to find something else for that...

and the only thing you are "keeping loose" is those shoulder joints, because they are falling apart lulz

This also alternate them with standing snatch grip presses.

I have great mobility tho. You have to stretch daily, before and after a work out to prevent getting muscle bound.
Everything gets hit a little different, but most importantly for me, it takes the pressure off of the rhomboids.

Nothing builds mass like behind neck presses. It's more difficult to cheat, so it's easier to keep constant tension Also love mixing in some ultra wide grip too on some sets

I always unrack from the front so unracking is never a problem.

Never did strict behind the neck press. I do bradford presses instead (which still hit behind the neck.)

I did really like doing BTN snatch grip OHP, but I never got my mobility to the point where I could comfortably add real weight.
