Had a $25 shot of Johnnie Blue to celebrate getting a job. It was good, but $25 a shot good? Fuaaaark, I don't know about that one.

I enjoy Black a lot and Black is super cheap out here in California, a fifth is like $28 (used to see it as high as $40 in Texas). Absolutely unbeatable quality to price ratio. But it doesn't say "happy birthday" like Blue does, nomsayin.

If you don't want to splurge on Blue, I think the sampler bottle idea for Dad is very thoughtful. Go ahead and share some new drinks with him.

OP is English I assume from the currency mentioned, "whisky" means Scotch in England, not the American usage which is broader and includes bourbon.

Only if you're going to be persnicketty about whether or not the 'e' is included. Regardless 'whisky' / 'whiskey' includes various grain spirits including American bourbon. Specifically 'whisky' is still a way broader term than only Scotch, for example this spelling includes all Canadian whisky which tends to be more like American rye whiskey than Scotch.
