Anyone else regret going to college?

Biggest regret and waste of time so far in my life srs.


I just think of where I’d be now if I had just joined the labor force at 18 and worked my way up the ranks accumulating a massive net worth by age 30.

Could have easily had another 150-200k in my portfolio before market returns compounded over 5 extra years. This is where having a financially aware parent to guide you in childhood pays off big time…had to learn all this chit on my own since the school system is basically designed to make you a lifelong wage slave.

I don’t regret it

But that’s because
a) I actually enjoyed both law and economics
b) my work financed my undergrad, graduate and professional years

First year was pretty tough though I worked full time and had more than full time course load

Lmao, just LMAO when I overhear coworkers talking about their precious 401k’s


One of them had the audacity to set one up with a 1% contribution per pay period LOL….like $50/mo compounded annually …… 56k by retirement LOL.


Edit: the worst part about these plans are the investments you are allowed to buy usually have high expense ratios and subpar returns vs the indeces, so a double whammy over the long term…..and never forget congress is coming after everyone that ‘cheats’ the system and accumulates ‘too much’ money in these plans.

I don't really know anyone that regretted a STEM degree, but I know quite a few people that regretted communications degrees and political science degrees

No it was great I went from 2006-2010 before peak clown world, and social media on over drive. I still remember going to parties, and bonding with people and sloots weren't glued to their phones taking pics for the gram. The professors were cool too, and didn't bring their politics into their teaching.

could i have made the same without a degree, sure but i didnt know what the career path would look like when i was 18.

thing with highschools is all they do is sell the kids on going to college and the only advice they get is from useless guidance counselors that never had a real fuking job.


They dont have like actual accountants, engineers ect come into the schools and tell the kids how the world really works.

Exactly, The mental gymnastics I see people going through to justify their precious 401k is astonishing I can't hate on people for saving or trying to invest to retire or whatever because I wanna see everybody win I really feel bad because I know they won't make it but they are just to stubborn to listen the reasons you gave are pretty much the exact reason why I don't have one and why I tell other people not to NOT to mention you can't even withdraw or use your money the way you want without paying FINES which is beyond absurd IT makes ROTH and VANGUARD way more money then it will ever make you and that's part of the reason why THEY have fines so they CAN keep using your MONEY ded FOOKING srs.

While that isn't wrong I just feel like it limits your upside because it will take you longer to buy properties or businesses...etc if your maxxxxing your retirement account which keeps you wage cucking.

I went to 3 colleges. First a university and flunked out. Then a community college to get my associates. Then a state school to get my bachelors degree. From a money standpoint it definitely wasn’t worth it. But I still had some really good times.

If I had to do it all over again I’d either major in STEM and never even think about joining a fraternity. Or I’d go to a trade school.

When you go away to college you literally have to become your own parent.

I could see back in the day when WAY less people had them and they WERE actually affordable but UNLESS you're on that doctor, lawyer, accountant time the RETURN on investment is BASICALLY non-EXISTENT with how much it costs not to mention EVERYBODY and their SISTER has a bachelors degree and EVEN masters are becoming pretty saturated you would PRACTICALLY need a PhD to actually stand out at this point. GOOD thing I am only going to advance my career and not start it DED fooking SRS.

That money is tied up under tax/early withdrawal rules though so it’s not necessarily liquid.

PhD can over-qualify you for some entry level roles and then basically sets you on a different career trajectory. And you have a harder time omitting your PhD because youre going to have work history gaps.

Oh, Yeah. It can but I mean more so when people are saying oh once I get my masters degree I will stand out IT is not really the case anymore. Yeah, Thankfully I learned and realized this early enough STILL made some mistakes but despite being FULLY conservative I would consider one of my more PROGRESSIVE beliefs to be EDUCATION reform it astonishes ME how BAD the public system is DESIGNED.

You're RIGHT though most people think THEIR job is going to be super IMPORTANT and rewarding because the WENT to college and HAVE a big boy degree but once they get into the work force and the ILLUSION of been super intelligent and SUCCESSFUL because you have a degree fades away and they're spending 8 hours a day doing spreadsheets I think that's when MOST people go on suicide watch and BLOW up to 300lb and just GO to bars every weekend to COPE not that you can't OVERcome that but it's going to some degree be a lot harder.

Interesting, I still can't see it being beneficial over an ACTUAL wealth creation strategy though NOBODY became a billionaire with a 401k or retired and fly private jets every week.

I think the only way trades make sense is with the intention to start your own business or go into the more corporate project management side I can't UNDERSTAND how tradies work their whole life as tradies I guess then pension helps but IT is not even like they make much and it SEEMS pretty LIFE denying to go to work everyday knowing you are getting cheated BASICALLY.
