Or are you saying that the largest defence contract in Australian history, is now obsolete before the first platform of 12 is even delivered?

Did Milley let China know this was happening before it became public? I sure hope so, wouldn't want him to disappoint his buddy Li.
Similarly,
Did Biden let China know this was happening before it became public? I sure hope so, wouldn't want him to disappoint his buddy Xi.

Um...I don't see a link to an article, but when you refer to a nuclear sub you are referring to what POWERS the sub, not what missile capability it has.
"A nuclear submarine is a submarine powered by a nuclear reactor. The performance advantages of nuclear submarines over "conventional" submarines are considerable. Nuclear propulsion, being completely independent of air, frees the submarine from the need to surface frequently, as is necessary for conventional submarines."

Whats significance of reaper drones? I thought there are basically those anywhere there is a US military presence/surveillance aka everywhere???
Australia working on Hypersonics? Ok, if US is part of anything why does Australia having worked on stuff matter? We don't really manufacture or have weapons programs afaik so why is that significant?
They operate hand in hand. Nuclear subs/ships have always carried nuclear weapons to date. Doesn't really make sense to have have a nuclear powered vehicle and using conventional weaponry. I guess states with nuclear vehicles are all nuclear POWERS aka have nuclear weapons. Nuclear subs in particular are the major deterrents they are because in theory you have no idea where they are situated and if you are to entirely wipe out a nations defenses the sub can still pop up and shoot multiple ICBMs with multiple warheads on them basically ensuring mutual destruction. Interesting to see how this develops.
The ability to develop/maintain obviously means your nuclear capability has just increased manyfold and you've spent the money required to be able to develop weapons or is my thinking wrong. Aus also has huge uranium etc stores

Australia would be much better off purchasing some of the new diesel subs from the Swedes that are incredibly quiet. For coastal defense they would be a much better alternative that nuke powered. It's not like they need something to go long range for months at a time submerged.

There are also a ton of articles on there debating if australia should move to nuclear propulsion or not for its submarines and talking about how they have no infrastructure in the country for fuel and no nuclear industry. it would be extremely expensive so they are debating the cost vs benefit.
the concentrations and purity for nuclear weapons is higher than fuel used in nuclear power plants but they would go hand in hand
They really have to consider the costs though. Because it is not like non nuclear designs are bad, look up AIP, they have varying designs and they can be extremely quiet and much cheaper. It depends on Australias strategy, if they want the capability to go very far out in the middle of the ocean or if they want to protect more of their local waters and save the expense of nuclear propulsion and all the infrastructure they will have to build to support it.
Also lol'd when i read their elected officials using business jargon like "off the shelf" purchases of submarines. lmao at these talking heads salesmen. THere is no such thing as off the shelf when it comes to purchases of 200 million -2 billion dollar military vessels. And if you contract some foreign company to build it they will put your chit at the lower priority compared to stuff for their own country. Years and hundreds of millions or billions of dollars to build. Its going to be over cost, over schedule and some chit wont work right. You arent buying a Camry.

On the topic of country's with subs, read about Canada's sub fleet. Politicians have buried this as much as they can.
30 year old submarines bought from the British in the 90s. The British never put them into service as they deemed them unreliable.!2 Canadians died in them just brining them over.
BILLIONS have been dumped in them. (2 billion more has just been allocated to them) and only ONE in this entire time Canada has had them. Has gone on patrol.
During the ONE patrol it served the u boat was run aground and severely damaged. The captain was dishonorably discharged.
While fixing the Cock sucking thing and doing pressure tests. The hull collapsed again in an entirely different place. The company fixing it has stated "the hulk will no longer be trustworthy at depths"
The Goverment has signed away any prosecution toward the testing and repairs the contractor is doing as they are putting it back in the fleet.
30 year old diesel electric subs.
1 patrol.
Billions and billions.
Silence.

“The trio, which will be known by the acronym AUUKUS, will make it easier for the nations to share information and know-how in key technological areas like artificial intelligence, cyber, underwater systems and long-range strike capabilities,’’ the report states.
There would be a “nuclear element to the pact in which the US and UK share their knowledge of how to maintain nuclear-defense infrastructure.”
Diplomatic and defence sources suggest it could involve operating US submarines out of Perth’s HMAS Stirling.
But there was also speculation that the British Government could be involved to support Australia secure the technology required to service nuclear submarines.
“Submarines are the ultimate deterrent and attack weapon: their location is hopefully unknown, and they can strike at targets without warning. But we need to expand beyond the capabilities of the Collins, and also the French Attack boats which we should abandon.
“Instead we should buy 12 of a proven design which is already in the water. We want long-range hunter-killer vessels. We also want them to be able to stay submerged for long periods to avoid detection. Nuclear does this in spades.”
I don't see why we Aus would spend the money to become nuclear capable and not develop the weapons associated. If they're sinking 90B into chitty subs that don't even get produced seems like getting the real deal is a better option?

Fast attack are the ones that would be used to take out shipping, commercial or military, and their loadouts would be limited to tor****es, think there are nuclear versions of these in existence, and tube launched cruise missiles. This is what most navies use and is likely what Aussieland is trying to get but I haven't read anything on the subject.
Both types have nuclear propulsion in the US navy.
One interesting thing about the old school diesel electric subs that third world navies have is they are very quiet and can be hard to find. A nuclear sub can't turn off the coolant pumps.... So the crap subs that NK has can be very dangerous still.

Nuclear sub doesn't mean it has to have nukes, it means it's nuclear powered so it can stay out at sea and underwater for a very long time. Usually that's so you can hide your nukes out in the middle of the ocean, but you don't have to.

Haven't refreshed the thread yet to see if i've been flamed.
But wow - good job there OP.
Would've never believed the government would admit their mistakes and throwing away all that money for the past 6 years on the future sub program.

just lmao at this "deal"
as soon as chit hits fan, Milley is gonna phone a friend CCP and tell them where subs are,
then Biden is gonna pull out all the troops from under Australias rug and leave them stranded in middle of nowhere.

Whats significance of reaper drones? I thought there are basically those anywhere there is a US military presence/surveillance aka everywhere???
Australia working on Hypersonics? Ok, if US is part of anything why does Australia having worked on stuff matter? We don't really manufacture or have weapons programs afaik so why .

To answer your question on the significance of reaper drones, this was a significant photo of 2 drones with gorgon stare in Afghanistan, as it made it public knowledge of their doings. Can you please look into WASS darpa project, as it is too complex. The cliff is, these AI modules are capable of tracking thousands of ppl and vehicles for months. The AI builds patterns, as AI algorithm do. When you pair this with the insane looking withdrawal of US military, you may have just exposed the endgame. To discover who the good, and who the bad. And trust me, when they are mixed together in a city, this is a good thing. When they are taking out the bad you will not know about it. It also assist them in refugees selection.
