I also had forgotten. The media spent 30 seconds on it then went back to circle-jerking over Fauci and Biden. If I recall when France asked USA to repay the money it borrowed for independence all they got was a "check's in the mail chuck, just wait"
Small price to pay to not be conquered.

In this case, that small gamble was a price they couldn't afford.

The question still being begged, despite being a country deemed valuable enough to be conquered, why wasn't this valuable country not able to become an economic powerhouse even after debt was forgiven?

It says it wasn't forgiven and they paid high interest rates on it. It crippled their economy until they finished paying it off in 1947.

I would say though, that it was valuable as a place to grow sugar, which is not so profitable anymore. Things like the US govt subsidizing corn to make high fructose corn syrup
