I miss when video games were pick up and play

no downloading, no load times, no long ass boring cutscenes, no updates, no long tutorial....

just pick up and play, simple fun.

playing my ps4 just made me miss n64. and retro gaming in general.

retro gaming was the best, man.

Same. Taking modern consoles offline is one of the most relieving feelings for modern tech, only way to really have a modern console that feels like the old consoles, but you can't do that with an active generation console really. I have a couple of Switches and Xboxes I have taken offline already, it's nice to have all these games I like downloaded on them and knowing I won't have to worry about any online related bullchit, I can just pick up the controller and start gaming.

Still, there was something about the days when physical media was the only way. Developers had to try harder, games had to be complete when they shipped, there was no such thing as DLC, and you could just buy a game, pop it in your console, and instantly start gaming.

The indie scene is pretty much a love letter to retro games and there are a ton of offerings.

I’ve been playing more old games lately than new, NES and SNES mostly, and have been loving it.

Rpgs that actually had good stories instead of just tried to have the largest open world, what you mentioned, and great creativity. The graphics haven’t even bothered me a little bit

This is the most important point. Now a lot of games are being released uncomplete and with a lot of glitches. People wouldn't let you get away with that back in the day.

Same the OG games were best because they were to the point. No long cut scenes and walk around simulations. They also had a lot more life to them because of the cool menus and soundtracks.

True, that's something I have taken note of. Sony really popularized the concept of trying to turn video games into movie like experiences with the Uncharted games on the PS3, which eventually became their focus during the PS4 generation that still seems to be going on to this day. I never cared for that because I was always preferred books and movies when it came to a good story, especially because the writing in good books and movies chits all over the writing in even the most critically acclaimed story based video games.

I mean I grew up in an era when Sega was king, the arcades were still alive, and gaming was all about the interactive experience of playing a game, and they were all relatively quick and easy to jump into. Like just about everything I played in the arcade growing up didn't really bother with a story, they just gave you fun things to do and the appeal was entirely in the activity. I feel like that's how games should be, and it's why the Nintendo Wii was such a big hit with a completely different crowd from the usual gaming crowd.

Yeah i don't have the attention span for movie games. Just give me some challenges and a big world and let me play. It's a shame because games like Witcher and Tomb Raider look so good but they are incredibly boring. 95% of games were to the point back in the day.

I felt this back in teh days of PS3, too. Maybe I'm just a dumb-dumb but I would buy an FPS, play it a bit, put it down, come back to it a few weeks or months later, have to start the game all over again because I forgot the controls and I keep getting my ass whooped.

I definitely miss just popping the disc of a new game in and playing straight away. Now you have to delete some other game you might still be playing to make enough space then wait a while day while the update downloads and installs.
