I can't do barbell OHP without getting shoulder pain

I can bench all angles for days, dips too. But as soon as I barbell OHP I get srs shoulder pain. Feels like it's between my front and lateral delt, all the way down my upper arm to my elbow. I can do dumbbell OHP just fine, but don't get gains with them as much as with a bench

tell me I'm not the only one that can't do BB OHP. I did a few sets 2 days ago and I'm still feeling it hard. what hell bro

at a guess, sounds like your forearms are bent inwards, try pressing making sure your arms are atleast 90degrees to the ground or higher.

It's probably your rotator cuff from going all the way down.

First stop OHP and see a doctor.

Last year I had the same pain. Saw a doc and got an MRI and turned out my labrum was torn. Got surgery in December and was back to 100% in about 6 months after rehab.

do deadhangs on the pullup bar with straps

progress with weight and time

use different grip widths and pronation/supination

do that for 6 months and your shoulders will be golden

I have a similar issue but with bicep curls. When I use a barbell I get a weird pain in my left shoulder/arm, but with dumbbells I don't. Also don't ignore shoulder pain. Like others said, get it checked out.

Does it hurt when you OHP the empty bar?

If not, find a weight that you can press with no pain and go from there

If it hurts when you press an empty barbell, find a range of motion (pin press, etc) that is pain free

This.

Also, start doing face pulls at the start of each upper body workout.

If an exercise doesn't feel good, don't do it. Stick with dumbbells or machines unless you are a strongman/oly lifter that absolutely has to be able to do heavy fixed two handed pressing overhead.

I have scoliosis and it has gotten so that I'm unable to do flat and incline barbell bench. So now I just stick with dumbbells and cables/hammer strength machines and I've been making plenty of gains in strength and size.

Honestly the pain is pretty intermittent; it comes and goes. I didn't have the pain until two days after, and it seems to be mostly gone now. I know I didn't tear anything or cause any serious damage. I'll keep an eye on it

OHP is notoriously harsh on the rotator cuff….I would stretch vigorously and warm up before any pressing workouts (and workouts in general) DED SRS.

You can get away with not warming up in your early 20s, but not as you approach 30 srs

Can you do floor angles? Looks like a stupid stretch/exercise that is pointless, but I was ready to try anything. First attempt, I had pain before getting my arms anywhere near straight. 3rd or 4th time trying, I heard/felt a pop in my shoulders and I felt a lot better and was able to easily do them after that. Serious, I was very surprised that I wasn't able to do this movement on my first attempt. It's such a simple looking move.

You can do something else

dumbells or use a football bar to change grip

I've had luck rehabbing my shoulders doing heavy internal rotations on the floor

Sounds like impingement (although for a I know there's a ton of things that also feel like that).

I have it chronically but if this is a one off for you then a bit of rest to let it heal should sort it

All you retards advising anything are ****ing dumb.

1. Nothing can be diagnosed if we don’t even know how his form is on the lift.

2. We don’t know what degrees of motion his shoulder has in extension, flexion, adduction, abduction, internal rotation, and external rotation.

3. We don’t know of any postural issues.

4. We don’t know of any soft tissue issues.

The only thing that this board can assess is the OPs form, and since he hasn’t posted a video of him lifting and he’s ignored my question on his grip width then it’s impossible to give any advice.

OP, go to a sports ortho, and a PT.
