The first year I joined this book challenge thread with the invitation from our good brother Jreacher, I read (actually listened) 89 books. All were written by D. Koontz.

The most of his books are abouta good team consists of a man and woman with kids and a dog, fighting against or running from evil cults/monsters/organizations.

The best combination of comradery, never tired of his story, because of that.

I missed his stories and I'll do it again, before I die, definitely.

The Sun Down Motel - Simone St. James – 7.5/10

Vivian (Viv) Delaney has been missing since November 1982. She was working at the seedy Sun Down Motel in Fell, Ny and disappeared around 3am and hasn't been seen since. It's now 2017 and Viv's 20 year old niece, Carly, wants to figure out happened to her. She decides to follow in her footsteps and work at the same hotel her aunt worked in. Carly and Viv run parallel lives which go back in forth in time from 1982 to 2017. It works fairly well but it's a little slow at times. Still, I liked it and thought it was interesting enough, but nothing really groundbreaking here.

The Martian - Andy Weir – 8.5/10

Finally got around to reading this, as I know some of you probably have read already a while ago.

So this begins, at a fast pace, with an accident that leaves Mark Watney (an astronaut) stranded on Mars. The rest of the crew assumes that he's dead and leave him to return to Earth. Mark is all alone and has lost contact with everyone, but he continues to log in daily entries to explain how he will survive his time on Mars. Survival depends on overcoming a multitude of near impossible obstacles, but Mark's a smart guy who specializes in both botany and engineering.

Funny in some parts, smartly written, and complex but for me this is where problem lies. My only real complaint is that it's a little too smart to follow easily (too much math and science is involved). This technical formality kind of bogs down the reading experience for me a little. My lesser complaint(s) would be that this was also a little too fast paced right from the beginning and the ending was a little abrupt as well. Minor complaints, I know. Otherwise, it's a fantastic book, read it (if you haven't done so already).

27. The History of the SAS - Chris Ryan

An interesting and informative account of the Special Air Services, as told by one of it's former members. It does not focus on it's creation in 1940s North Africa, but focuses more on post war to present day. A highly interesting read.

It dedicates a whole chapter to the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege which really put the group on the map (whether they liked it or not).

Can't Hurt Me - David Goggins – 8/10

Not really big on self help/inspiration books but this was better than I expected it to be.

David Goggins wasn't given a good hand or a silver spoon but instead a pretty sh!t upbringing. His father was an abusive a$$hole that beat his wife and kid, cheated with prostitutes, and only cared about money. At this point I thought I knew where this was going and overall it's nothing new or exciting... I was wrong. David turned his life around and pushed himself further and further to achieve his own personal goals. What did he accomplish was simply astounding and unheard of in both military feats and physical feats of endurance.

However I do think that the author did push himself too far, and maybe that's not the best message to be sending to the readers. His body was breaking down to the point of near death, which is a bit too much even though his never give up attitude is very impressive. I think you should know your limits before you do something that is irreversible. Still, the determination here is inspiring and that I can commend.

The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman – 6/10

Earlier I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, which I really liked, this not so much. Now I understand Gaiman likes to immerse his stories in a dark mysticism, which I like as well. Mystic stories can alter reality with things like magic or spirits makes sense and is intriguing for most readers, but the parameters of such need to be clear. With Ocean at the End of the Lane it made sense, sort of, but here not really. This was kind of a jumbled mess and a lot of which seemed side-tracked from the plot. Also this felt like English folklore for young adults. I'm not really a fan of young adult books (though I might have to read at least one Harry Potter book sometime) and there are some interesting parts, but this is mostly a rubbish story.
