Misc decides my major.. again

Whaddup brahs. So back in 2013 I graduated high school and had no idea what I wanted to go to college and major in. I asked the misc and they told me nursing. So boom- got a degree in nursing in 2017. I’ve been working as a nurse ever since. Did hospital work, travel nursing, home healthcare, rehab facilities. Turns out, I fking hate nursing and no longer want to do it.

I’ve got no preference at all, nothing strikes out to me more than the other. I can do pretty much any job and get by (except nursing, fook nursing). I’m saving money heavily and invest 50% of my income to retire early. So I guess I’m looking for the profession that pays the most.

So, I want to go back to my local community college and get a bachelors degree from the few they offer.
I was thinking Business with a specialization in finance. Or cybersecurity, although I’m looking for a future workplace where there will be HBBs all around and I fear cybersecurity ain’t it.

Any recommendations from the list of programs I posted? Thoughts? Anyone have any of these majors and doing well?

I’ve been doing home health this past 1-2 years. It’s been okay, but still prefer a job where I wear a suit and am able to show some creative abilities and work my way up in income.

Tbh I just get bored too easily. It’s not exciting anymore and I want to try something else. I imagine this next route I go down I won’t stay there forever either. Life is too short to stay in one line of work.

I'm a nurse

Do healthcare management, you can wear a suit. Otherwise get your masters, why waste your nursing degree? Nursing informatics, etc. So many options in different settings.

Is there any correlation to nursing and healthcare management? I’ve honestly got no idea wtf it is.

Bro, thank your lucky stars you got a nursing degree. I went to community college with so many kids that wanted to go that path but ended up getting put on a wait list. And then life took over and they never got a chance to pursue that path.

With a nursing degree, you don't necessarily have to work in a healthcare setting, you could go into the cosmetic field and inject botox and fillers for rich middle age women.... that field is a huge well of money because women become addicted to cosmetic procedures.

imo, take your time and find something that interests you. luckily, you have a job already, so when you do decide to make a career shift, you can still work on the weekends to supplement your income while you wait for your career to pick up.

career changes are doable. my brother was going to be a nurse; he went to school, finished, and was studying for the NCLEX. his real passion was art and video games. instead of studying, he decided to spend the summer working on his art portfolio and computer animation. when he finished, he sent his work to a bunch of video game companies for an unpaid internship. eventually got one and got hired full time a month later. that was almost 20 years ago and he's glad he made the right choice. he's really gifted though; he taught himself how to use computer animation programs, way before colleges were offering them. the one class he did take, he was teaching the instructor how to use the program. he's laughing at some of his coworkers because they went to these art colleges and raked in over 100k in student loans, whereas his student loans were miniscule (colleges in CA were really cheap 20 years ago; community colleges were 10 dollars a credit.)

That’s the thing, I don’t want to work on middle aged women.. I dislike most middle aged women, and everyone else I find myself working for. I find myself having to put on a fake happy persona while at work and it’s making me miserable. I’ve become a cynical, grumpy bastard who just wants to put my head down and grind out some work and be rewarded with $ for my hard efforts. You can’t do that in my current profession.

Can confirm that cyber security doesn't have too many HBB's, but it's definitely not without. Programming / Red Team / Networking teams probably have darn near 0 HBB's, but Cyber Security has some throughout. There's plenty of non-technical roles in the industry of Cyber that attract HBB's, srs. Think Fraud teams, Data Policy teams, Insider Threat teams, well paying and in cyber, but not very technical, always find some cuties in those kinda teams srs. Or in managerial roles otherwise, where they were previously hands-on technical. Not saying HBB's can't be technical, but you know what I mean.

So many people get business degrees and then wish they got something else. I'd say only go for a business degree if you had a very tangible picture of what you'd do years later with the degree in hand.

EDIT: How much do you make as a nurse? I assume you want similar, or higher, in your next career? Srs though I'm curious what nurses make.

That’s true about business degrees. I like the idea of it though because I could probably find a position for any company I wanted to work for. So many different avenues I could go down. And with a finance specialization I could go to the banking/financial side.
As for nursing I currently make $26/hr. But I’m only part time and working 20ish hours per week. When I was doing home health full time I was able to work as many hours as I wanted and racked up 91k when I was 25. When I did travel nursing I only went on 2 assignments but made 1.6k on average per week for 26 weeks. So it varies.

Go to Cali as a travel nurse and work in icu you’ll bank 120k+

I live in Florida where there's no income taxes and, at least compared to Cali and crap the CoL is low. Most people who enter cyber in FL make $60k/yr for their first entry full time gig. I've been in it for 4 years and expect to gross $110k this year, but some of that is due to bonuses and overtime.

Go get your captain's license. Operate commercial vessels and make 90k starting. Some companies near me are offering 400k for a captain. Then get yourself a wool knit sweater and an Irish cap and live your life.

I live right on the coast, I’ve got a handful of friends that have their captains license. They best gigs they’ve been able to get is charter boats for local restaurants fresh fish menu. Super competitive apparently.

Tricky question. Cyber is an entire industry. It's like asking "so do you like medical industry?"

I've always been in "incident response and investigation" operations type of roles. Where alerts fire and I'm investigating, calling, setting up meetings, blocking URLs/IPs, quarantining emails, quarantining machines, handing things off to other teams, engaging other teams (legal teams, forensics teams, engineering teams, etc.).

That kind of role has been volatile. Most days are relaxing, looking at false positive / non-malicious stuff, sending out emails. But some days are hectic, requiring me to lead a call with some executives and high level people. You can't anticipate it. I used to have some anxiety about that. Still do when things get crazy.

It's fully remote, so when it's slow and boring there's YouTube/Misc/Gaming/Chores. When it's busy and there's higher profile higher severity stuff going on, I'll find my shirt is very very sweaty by the middle or end of the shift.

Other roles include Forensics, Threat Intelligence, Red Teaming, Penetration Testing, Fraud teams, Security Implementations, Security alert content creation, and others. It's a pretty diverse industry, not just "bad thing happens and it gets handled by you alone" as a lot of people might think lol, except maybe in small no-name companies.

EDIT: Worth noting that these operations types of roles like I'm in are hectic when there's a fire. But they're the ones that offer overtime usually. Most of the non-ops roles are 9-5 with no overtime, projects with deadlines on things, etc.

I just thought about a career working with computers/technology for that last 30mins.. that ain’t it for me boyos. Realized I know absolutely nil about computers. I hate technology.. and computers. Definitely do not have a knack for it.
