Thoughts on living in a trailer? srs

With the housing market pretty crazy, I thought about maybe getting a trailer. Would be like $200-300 cheaper compared to what I pay in rent and would allow me to save to buy a house that isn't a piece of chit/in a chithole neighborhood. Anybody ever lived in one? I don't think I ever been in one so have no idea what they look like, but they have some decent looking ones for $60kish in a somewhat nice looking park.

I tried it for the same reasons as you, to save money to buy a real house. I signed a lease for one year and barely made it through the year because it was just too small living quarter, and no privacy. The mobile homes are so close together, if you open your window, you're literally seeing into your next door neighbor's living room, bedroom, and vice versa. So you can see everything unless you close your curtains. You can also hear everything. One neighbor didn't change their smoke detector battery and let it keep beeping for days, I could hear it the whole time and had to call park management to force them to change it. Also there's no yard. I used to live in small tiny studios when I was younger, but that eventually gets old and you can only live "tiny" for so long. If you're young though and don't need much, this could be a good way to save money to buy a house, if you can tolerate the cons.

Edit to add: It actually wasn't a trailer I rented, it was one of those brand new single mobile homes in a mobile home park that also rented out trailer and RV spaces. A trailer would actually be much smaller living space. All depends on how small a space you can tolerate living in.

I think it would be interesting. But tbh the only way I'd want to is if I could live like Mel Gibson did in Lethal Weapon. Park it in a private area neighboring the coast, or in some kind of dope view. Think that's illegal to do though in most states, without owning/renting some land.

I've never done it before but I'd keep in mind that trailers typically go down in value, as opposed to up, unless you get a deal or something. Also you gotta deal with waste management and chit.

Trailer parks kinda sketch me out, maybe due to Trailer Park Boys... but anyways I know someone who lived in a trailer park and then saved up a ton of money to sell it and buy their own house, srs. To them it was like living pretty close to free almost.

You can pretty much weed out the tweaker ones by looking at how new/old the living units are. That goes for both RVs and mobiles. The more upscale the park, only newer models will be allowed.

You might want to check where you plan on renting first. They may have a 5-10 year old limits and anything older, they won't allow.

Also, if you sign a lease, they will do a background check, previous renting history, criminal check, credit and employment history on you and have a strong no drugs, no criminal activity policy. Upscale parks will also have recreation facilities such a pool hall, tennis courts, etc.

I live in the southwest where lots of retired folks come to get away from the winter so there's easily more upscale parks here than tweaker parks, in fact I think the laws passed have banned aging mobile units kicking out most tweakers, forcing them to move back to the inner city.

Lived in a 14’ wide once , but was on its own lot in town . Very claustrophobic imo , almost to the point of insanity.
I think a 16’ would be tolerable though , as it’s surprising how two feet can change an environment

The one I was looking at was a double wide, no idea what the actual width footage was. The trailer park seemed pretty upscale for being a park, so I don't think I would have to worry about tweakers. The close proximity to other people may bother me, especially since I don't know how well insulated trailers are. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment that's decent size. The trailer was a 3 bedroom somehow. I'm not sure if I'd like having a place that's rectangle instead of more square-ish, it would feel off.

I don't care so much about depreciation, because I'd be saving $300 from renting and even if the trailer is worth half of what I paid when I sell it, still better than throwing away that money on rent.

And to clear up any confusion, I thought a trailer = mobile home, so I'm not really sure what the difference is.

A mobile home is moved by a semi-truck and not designed to be on the road permanently but just moved professionally to a park to stay put for however long. It's closer to a real home, than a camper.

A trailer home is like an RV, it can be towed by your own truck and it's designed for regular road usage and hauling. You can move it anytime you want. It's more like a camper.

Mobile homes which are now starting to be called manufactured homes didn't use to have to meet HUD code standards as site-built homes, but many states have passed laws that require newer ones to be HUD code built. So modern ones are no where close to the old ones which were basically just metal scraps back in the day.

I would get the cheapest trailer I can find. Make sure the toilet is new, shower is new, kitchen is new, and a new clean bed. I would only spend my time in the trailer for the basic necessities like showering, cooking, and using the restroom. The rest of the time, I would probably be going to school or part time job.
But mobile homes is no place to live.

I've already calculated it and it average person needs about 800-1200 sqft of living space to be happy.

I live in a 28’ x 60’ double wide and I like it. The key is to dress them up so much people don’t know they’re trailer houses. Have had lots of opportunities to build a house on the ranch over the years but this house is the first one I ever bought so I just decided to stick with it, sentimental value etc.

Mostly this if you mean a manufactured home. Prices have increased quite a bit though.

When you say you would "save" $300 a month are you including the cost of lot rent and utilities w/the payment on the trailer to get your monthly total? I've seen lot rents as high as $800 a month for better parks. Lot rents aren't fixed and usually only go up. Also in a park you are subject to more rules than when owning a home with an HOA. It's closer to being in a condo or an apartment.

On your own land it could be fine- about the same as any house.

why not just live out in the boons? buy some cheap land and get a cheap towable rv to live in. run it on a generator/solar.
