Some musky lures I designed, carved and painted.
This is the one the fish were all fired up over yesterday. Caught the one in the picture on it. First time trying it was a huge success
This one is a topwater. The green tape is covering a stainless steel tail flipper that throws water like crazy. Its not finished in this pic.
This is a shallow diving cisco pattern. Should be a good fall musky lure.
Even getting one musky on a homemade lure feels good. Hopefully the paint jobs get better. Just getting used to using an airbrush. Never used one before.

Those lures turned out great. Love the coloring on the black and yellow. What did you carve them out of? Never caught a muskie, how are they for eating?

Carved out of clear western red cedar.
And musky here are kind of like tarpon. Pretty much purely for dick measuring lol. More of a trophy thing, although they are legal to keep over 54", but most people don't if they can find a fish that big. They reproduce slowly and are a real challenge to consistently catch. You generally have follows from, or hook and lose the vast majority of them because they fight so hard. massive head shakes.

Yes, get it as sharp as you can! lol.
Half the battle of sharpening an axe is the axe having decent enough steel to hold and edge. Lots of things work good. Files are fine in the bush, and there are special round axe stones you can buy. the best combination of value and quality I have found are the hand forged axes made by Gransfors Bruks. Snow and Neally and Hultafors are also somewhat comparable. Department store axes are able to be sharpened of course, but dont get as sharp, develop burrs easier and dull faster. I like a thin blade too, and they are often quite thick. Iltis Oxhead axes are also serviceable.
My favorite method though is what I use to sharpen skinning knives, axes, and sharpen hooks:

Often a knife just needs a quick stropping to get it back to perfect, but due to the nature of how an axe is used they often need a bit of material removed each time. Try and maintain a flat or slightly convex bevel, and avoid heating the edge till it turns color, as this ruins the temper of the steel. Light pressure, and keep it moving if using a sander like this. With hand tools this is not a worry.

We are talking like, a microscopic level. Razor blades shave because they have had the burr polished off.
If the abrasive you are using doesnt make the steel shine, you really arent ready for a strop. Get a fine enough abrasive, then polish it by making many light passes with the leather. I prefer a bit of polishing compound, but not even sure that is proper lol.
Lots of videos on how to use a strop. Basically just drag the edge over the leather at a slightly steeper angle than you sharpened it at.
if you did it right, you will be able to shave arm hair.
When I am skinning, I never have hair on my left arm from testing my knives lol.

The big ones lay eggs, so with rare exceptions they all are put back.
I keep a few medium sized fish. Younger fish have less time to bioaccumulate toxins as well.

My wife got her personal best pike last night.
She also caught a nice bass to add to the family fish fry in a few weeks. A few walleye hits, but none stuck.
I often get skunked when she comes out...lol

Went out and tried for some bass this weekend. Biggest was 19 3/4". One after another. Lots of fun when they stack up on shoals this time of year.
