Motorcycle brahs, help a virgin out

Never driven a bike, have no close friends that have one to ask or learn to ride from I'll be going in as ignorant and green as possible

I've narrowed it down to wanting a cruiser/"muscle" cruiser. I'd only ever drive it to work and the gym no plans on hitting the interstate or any **** like that

I don't want to spend a ton of money on something that may end up collecting dust either, 10k is the max price im looking at

Harley Night rod and the Yamaha raider are the 2 that have caught my eye the most, indian night bobber's look neat too but not looks wise they just don't quite hold up to the harley or yamaha. All the above are heavy and supposedly easy enough to learn on but with enough power I wouldn't get bored of it after a year.


enlighten me with better bikes to look at, best ways to learn, things you've learned that matter the most when shopping and buying them and also why I'm retarded for wanting one

A muscle cruiser is not beginner friendly. Would not recommend starting on anything over 800 cc as a starter bike srs. That said I prefer the look of the night rod. I prefer black on black for my bikes.

Yes if they're under 800cc. If a muscle cruiser is what you want that's fine but I wouldn't recommend buying one until you've at least learned not to whiskey throttle and know how to handle the weight. Start with something more noob friendly.

Is that a major risk even on cruisers over 800cc? I've read they have some pull but because they're so heavy and the way you're seated must less likely than a sport bike

Yes because these bikes produce A LOT of torque at low rpm. The likely hood of you of giving it a little too much throttle and running wide into something is very high if you're inexperienced. That said, video below shows what a very experienced rider can do with these bikes.

I would recommend to get a cheaper used bike first since most new non experienced riders will drop there bike the first year. Just a suggestion.

Take a MSF course first boyo.

Most people recommend buying a 250 to learn on before upgrading. I did that but found it totally unnecessary. Upgraded to a 700 right after the MSF course. I feel like the course is enough for getting your feet wet. Just don’t be an idiot on a more powerful bike and you’ll be fine.

Take a class at a dealer (usually are on 500cc or less bikes). Buy used for first bike. I’ve had a variety and have been riding for 30 years. I’ve never had a big cruiser mostly dirt bikes, enduros, Harley 1200 Sportster, sport bikes. Currently have an Adventure Bike which is my favorite handles a variety of conditions. A suzuki V-strom 600 would be a great first bike. They are forgiving but still have enough go to be fun. They require simple maintenance and are easy to work on and parts are pretty cheap. I also think naked sport bikes are fun for short rides MT-07 or MT-09 for beginners or an MT-10 for more experienced. They are tuned a little different than the sport / race versions and more forgiving and probably better long term reliability.

think the courses are worth it? I've read mixed things on if they're worth the time investment vs just going to an empty parking lot (got one spitting distance from my house, probably 150 yards long 60 yard wide, 0% chance of hitting anything)

new riders usually make one of two mistakes.

They get the most powerful bike money can buy and its just way to much to deal with or the get the smallest one money can buy.

The smallest one has major issues as it doesnt have enough power to get you out of trouble which 100% you will get into on a bike. You can trust any one else on the road to see you so they will turn right into you even intentionally at time. You will need enough power to get the hell out of there.

That said the cruiser types are great, anything around a 500 or 750 range is plenty of power and light enough to get your feet wet.

Get one big enough to go on the highway as it is safer for biles than city strets. no cross traffic, lights, turn lanes or any of that, just people going straight for the most part. They will still run you down but you have more space on each side to escape it.

They will run you down so the best advice is to not trust any other driver, none of them. You can be making eye contact, smiling and waving at them and they will stiff run you off the road.

I have had a bunch but an example is a NICE low mile Vstar 1300 costs like 3k on the used market

went to a massive shop today had literally everything i've looked at

the indian scout bobber was far and away my favorite, it worth buying a v-star for 6 months then dumping it to buy something nicer? there's so many god damn cheap asian cruisers for sale im worried i'd drop a few thousand and be stuck with the damn thing

don't spend a lot on your first bike because you will probably drop it a few times, especially if you have zero prior experience. it's not a bad thing, it's just that its going to happen. definitely take the MSF safety course everyone learns something from the course even if you have years of experience, its also the easiest way to get your motorcycle license. as for bikes, don't get something too heavy for a first bike. light bikes are easier to control and better to learn one.

They bottom out in price... One for 3k today is probably worth 3k in one year

Nothing wrong with a Vstar
I would not be happy with a small engine one but I take it as what it is.. A fake Harley and they run and ride well and are reliable

About the engine size It is more about weight on those
The power is not crazy
A 600 sport bike is multiples the speed of them

Weight is down low on them and the stand over is low are well
You can get crash bars or highway pegs or w/e they are called that will prevent damage in a low speed crash/drop
