Home improvement brahs please share your wisdom

I’m trying to hang a muay thai heavy bag on my patio with one of the crossbeams. If I use an eyebolt do I need to put a nut on top? Or is it okay to just be drilled and screwed into the crossbeam?

I'd go all the way through with and use a nut, if possible. Make sure to use a washer too.

I just feel like if you only screw it in, eventually it will pull/fall out.

Not knowing the size of the crossbeam, I wouldn't do either. Would throw an axle strap over the beam and hook to that. They are $7 at Home Depot or Harbor Freight.

Gravity? Wrap it around twice and it will act as a choker on the beam.

Figured a hard hat brah would know things like this.

Damn I don’t want to drill through my patio roof.

What if I drill a horizontal hole in my cross beam and put the eyebolt in horizontally? Or does an eyebolt have to be vertically?

Sorry if this post doesn’t make sense. Im part of the below 100iq crew.

If you cannot put the eye bolt through the beam completely you could put a bracket with like 4 lag bolts instead. I would think 1 eye bolt would come loose if it was the lag type.

Eye bolts are way weaker if used horizontal.

Nah, if a strap is choked no one is kicking hard enough to move it. Doesn't matter since OP doesn't have access to install either a strap or through bolt.

Horizontal eye bolt is roughly 25% of the full working load.

All in all, a regularly installed 3/8ths eye bolt will probably be fine for the OP, assuming the wood isn't rotten or split and it's properly pre-drilled. It's a 100 LB bag(?), won't take much of anything to hold it up, and not really life threatening if/when it falls.

Buy a thick piece of stainless steel chain and it'll sit there for years without being harmed.

Just went and took this pic because nothing better to do. This piece has been sitting outside for 5 years now. Most of what you see is just dirt and such on it. It's perfectly fine.
