HOW DO YOU IMPROVE yourself, and how much time a day do you spend on it? (Srs thread)

Srs thread, share your wisdom and experience boys and let's keep making it here at the end of 2021.

What activities do you consider to be improving yourself or your life conditions? And how much time do you commit to those goals?

I put a time tracker on my phone (Boosted, but there are dozens to choose from) and I track how much time I put daily into my self improvement.

The activities I track at present are:

*Fitness
*Practicing an instrument
*Learning (skilling up professionally thru online courses)
*Meditation
*Reading
*Side Hustle

At the moment I am consistently putting an hour and 20 mins into one of these buckets so that 5% of my 24 hours is on becoming a better me or maintaining what I've already built.

Seeing that number inspired me to push for 10%. This might be a small goal for some but I work full time and spend as much quality time with my wife and children as I can.

Inb4 "every hour of every day srs". You absolutely fukking do not.

I'll have to check out that tracker, I try to improve daily but a lot of the time after work gym then dinner I tend to check out for the day. I have books I need to continue reading, drum set I need to practice more, about to start an LLC and try to get a side hustle going with my friend. I also listen to a lot of fitness and longevity podcasts and try to implement things into my life that could help increase my healthspan as alzheimers and such runs in my family.

It all starts with introspection. You have to realize your shortcomings and then address them. Set goals and make plans on how to improve your deficiencies.

Actually pour a lot of time into this, but do not track.

On average, at least 350 minutes a day.

Everything from OP but the instrument practice. Probably an area I'm lacking, music and arts.

Good answers. Tai chi is an unconventional one to me - what does it give you?

I enjoy Boosted since it lets you start a timer or log activity after the fact.

It's not so much a productivity push as it is rewarding to log that time and know you've done something good for yourself. Knowing that a chunk of my day is committed toward me getting "ahead" is a good feeling - in money terms it's the feeling of having part of your paycheck going towards savings/investments, that a year from now you'll be better off.

For what it's worth I also started off tracking video games since that's my "time waster". Once I had a baseline for that I stopped tracking it - my goal isn't to feel guilty for my recreation/down time, I think you need some of that in every life, so long as it's not a distraction from what you want to accomplish.

I had a boss once who had a severe inferiority complex. She talked about "bettering oneself" by taking classes.
I had a number of problems with that idea.
first, are people with school knowledge somehow better than people educated via newspapers and life's experiences?
Also, what's so bad about a person that they need to be better?
The stuff they call bettering is really to me, recreation. ie, books, art, gym.

This is very true. I set aside a little time on Sunday nights to review the last week, plan the upcoming week in terms of broad strokes what I want to accomplish, and look back/forward ~3 months to see how I am doing and where I can do more.

School learning is only better in that it's intentional - someone took the time and effort to TRY and learn vs just absorbing the lessons from their experiences. Both are valid.

Saying a person can be better is not the same as saying a person is bad, that's a false equivalence. If you're a millionaire you're not poor, but you're not as rich as a billionaire.

honestly already content AF.

already have more than I need, enjoy miscing, reading, my hobbies, lifting, outdoors, my business.

Today I don't really have anything to do. Maybe go buy a new shirt or something for winter.

next week doing a 1-night road trip, then thanksgiving.

In life, I'm always taking the path of least resistance tbh.

also, you should never "plan" or "allocate" time toward improving something. Your natural propensity toward something should make the time FLY BY and you just simply enjoy every second of it.

I agree, but it seems like you've literally planned your life around maximizing the time you can spend on these things. Aren't we saying the same thing two different ways.

No not really.

I don't have to plan to maximize my time with things I enjoy. I just do it.

Like miscing, I just sit here and chit post because I want to. I didn't need to assign time for it.

Or reading - you're a bookcel - If you force yourself to read because "it's time to read" you won't really absorb the material as well as if you just did it because you wanted to.

I don’t track anything or consider it improving I guess. But I jog in the morning around the lake, it’s peaceful and destressing, lift either before or after work (4/5days a week), dabble in volume trading, read recipe books and spend a lot of time outdoors with the kids.

Agree with this. I used to try to force myself to do certain things at certain times and it's kind of a miserable thing to do. Realized I do a lot better if I just do whatever I feel like tbfh. I think the key is that I actually enjoy going to the gym, reading books, listening to educational material, working on businesses etc. so I don't even have to really think about it.

Forcing yourself to do stuff never worked for me. And you'll always get crushed by the people that actually enjoy what they're doing in every competitive marketplace.

This.

Life is like playing video games. You like certain things for intellectual or physical stimulation because you naturally enjoy it.

No one needs to "schedule" video game time.

You missed the crucial word "can" in what I wrote my friend. If you think I'm forcing myself to do any of those things you're mistaken. Time spent bettering yourself is deeply fulfilling. Wanting to maximize that time isn't a forced death march. Its the exact opposite.

You're still misunderstanding me. I'm not sure what part of that is reading as forced but it's just the opposite. Seeing how much of my time I reinvest in myself just makes me wish that number was larger. I'd triple it in a heartbeat if I could.

Cool thread! I don't really keep track of what I'm doing, though I'd say probably an hour and a half a day is focused self-improvement time.

One of the best things I've done in the last year and change is make a commitment to call two people a day. Not text. Checking in on others and being useful mostly keeps me from defaulting back to my self-absorbed and selfish waysEven if you're just leaving someone a voicemail, you're still reaching out. It's done wonders on my being a better human goals.

Been trying to get a solid morning routine going.

5:30 wake up
5:50 in the gym
6:50 hot oats, dates, raisins, proton shake and fish oil, shower
7:15 in the office.

Days are way better when I start chit off right.

It helps me to clear my mind and focus, probably helps at least a little with flexibility too (which reminds me, I really need to do more of that). I've heard it called moving meditation so perhaps the benefits are at least somewhat similar.

I definitely feel more comfortable on days I laze around in the morning, but days I follow a schedule like this I get more done, not just in the morning but throughout. It makes a big difference in my entire mindset for the day.

Weight train 1-1.5 hours five days (lucky as fuk i can do this on the work clock)
Get home kiss the wife, grab her ass and compliment her on her looks in various different ways (making sure to be in a spot our son can see or hear). Then go over the boys school work with him (even though it doesn't need to be done because he rarely fuks anything up).
Then we either play games, wrestle/box or weight train (etc) for a while.
Son reads us a chapter of whatever book he is reading.
Then once he is sleeping i fuk the chit out of the wife and we go to sleep.

I consider all of those activities improving myself as well as my family. Dont really have time for another hobby or to read etc.
