I think this might be my favorite car ever! (pic).

So I have had some cool cars, but there is something about this car that I am enjoying possibly more than any car I have owned. (ever). It is a connection when driving that is hard to explain. Just a pure analog experience.

This morning I was asked to do some shots with a photographer. He is a guy that took some of my favorite shots of my other cars. One of them below for reference looks like it belongs in a magazine. I just love his eye.

So this is just a cell phone pic by me. I cant wait to see what he comes up with!

The car goes in for a track safety inspection today and my son and I are traveling to Virginia International Raceway for a track day next week!

Never seen the show. But had an old impala in highschool. Although not as nice. I did "modify" it. With 14 cans of flat black spray paint and got my brother to lay on the hood so I could outline him!

Definitely agree OP...while I have had limited time behind the wheel of 600 hp cars with paddles...driving a manual 110 hp '86 vw to the edge of its capabilities through some back roads was far more satisfying in terms of pure driving experience. The latter won't impress people on the street, or passengers...but the removal of the driver as a cog in the mechanism through modern electronic aids and transmissions makes me go "meh" regardless of the car.

If I had $300K to spend on a vehicle, I would end up with 7 or 8 really fun ones instead of one modern one.

Yea this car is just so much fun! After we get our last track event for the year, I am breaking down the car for some extensive mods over the winter. Besides a bunch of suspension tweeks, we are doing significant power mods. At the end of the day we are brining to same power to weight as a Performante. Not going as high as we could because we want reliability also. But at some point down the road we may go there. For now, I want it to run with the GT3RS's. At the power levels we are going, it will be on par with them... VERY excited

Cool car. My brother had one a good few years back which he modded with a Civic Type R engine, nitro kit among other things. It was an absolute demon. His friend threw it around a track wall one day though and my brother was too busy to repair it, so he sold it on to someone else at a substantial loss.

Yea, they dont take well to even small accidents. No crash bumpers and almost any damage results in them being totaled.

Exactly. Most fun car I have ever driven on the track. Here is a vid from my last track day. It was my first time ever with this car on the track so I was not pushing the envelope. Even at over 1.2g in the corners the car had a lot more in it and never once even twitched. Excited to get it out on VIR

Actually it is a yamaha power plant. They developed for toyota. In the elise it gets an 8500 rpm redline. Stuffed in a 1900lb car you would just have to experience to understand. This winter though, we will be doubling the power output. Then the fun will really begin! Still fun now. I can hang with any GT3RS in the corners, but they pull on the straights. We are going to change that

I cant make financial decisions for you, but it is not something I would do. I dont finance toys In fact, I dont finance anything. Never had a loan after student loans. Just never bought stuff till I could afford it....yes, including homes.

The Huracan NEVER fails to disappoint. Just did a mountain run last friday. Was an awesome day but ended up cracking a windshield which sucked. My car is modified and putting out about 860 hp so fun factor is cranked up. But I could not help but feel I should have brought the lotus up there and I would have embarrassed a bunch of the guys I went with.

genuinely curious what you were busted for? he was coming at you in the opposite direction around a turn so it couldn't have been your speed because ....why???

Only the RS. (RennSport track focused versions). A Weissach and 'regular' RS.

The 911 turbo is a nice street car, but a terrible track car. Have a buddy who sold his GT3RS and picked up a turbo for his daily. Took it to the track once and he was so frustrated with it he skipped the last 2 track days rather than drive it on the track. Awesome car, but not what a 3RS can do.

Not a big porsche guy myself, but I recognize they are awesome cars. Just dont do it for me.

S2000's are cool cars. In fact, on of the guys in my group who has more cars than any in our group ranging from SVJ''s to AMG GT Pro's, GT2RS, 4 or 5 GTR's, NSX....and on and on.... He is an S2000 fan and that is what he is brining out to VIR next week. He just loves it on the track.

I would say the Lotus is a lot more car and the nature of it's construction, full monocoque construction and Lotus engineering, the elise/exige can be taken much further and are much more refined as a true track car. But the S2000 is a car guys love to race on a track.

This was a vid a few months back of my son in my orange Elise chasing down a S2000. This was my sons 3 time ever driving a stick car and he was reeling him in pretty good. (proud dad)

You can see we were about evenly mated power wise, but the lotus will take it in the corners all day long and out brake it.

It really is. I am over the top excited about this car. I have a feeling when I get my power mods done, the Huracan is going to do a good amount of sitting...

GT3RS is the pinnacle of a street legal race car. There is no challenging that. That said, I dont love them. And with the PDK (dual clutch trans) you are another step removed from the car. The lotus is just pure analog. No power steering, no stability control....just a gas pedal, clutch and brake.

Also on the track your insurance does not cover damages. I took my Huracan out to the track, and it sucks in the back of your head worried you may go into the tires of break something. Many guys change out the carbon brakes when they get the car because a full brake job will cost you 25k. And tracking the car you will burn them up.

The lotus is so light, you will heat cycle the tires out before you wear them out. You can go almost a season on a set of pads as well. You just cant overheat the lotus brakes. The car is so light.

Last but not least, I want to teach my son how to work on cars. I want to build it together. Anyone can buy a car. This we are building. Already have. When I got it it was a great starting point. I pulled all the body kit off. Drilled out all the fastners, Trimmed and refit the panels. Then I had the car repainted and put it all back together. My son and I ran the Vinyl stripes. Last week we put an AIM data logging dash in...etc. This is about building the car we want and doing it ourselves. I want to teach him some of the things in life that I have come to understand. Committing to a project to a project, and figuring out how to get it done. Not paying someone else to do it.

So for all those reasons, when I was looking for a fun car to track where I was not risking 250k+ out there every time I drove it, or let my 14 year old drive it, the lotus is the PERFECT choice. With the mods I am putting in the car, I will only have about 65-70 in it and I can run it all day long and not feel bad. To me....this may not be a crazy 'super car' but I will enjoy it probably more than something I can just buy. No one else will have a car like this because it will be what we decided to build ourselves.

Speaking of 3RS's. My son was running the sim tonight at VIR in the 3RS. This is him going up the uphill esses.

We then went back to the elise and he helped me work on my lines. We go there Tues and he helped me shave 2 seconds off my lap times and got me fixed in a few areas. Where the sim is very helpful ESPECIALLY in a manual car is to learn all your corners and what gear you want to be in for taking them. In that way the sim is invaluable.

Yes the R8 is a bargain. They are cousins. The R8 is dressed in a tux ready for a formal event and wont offend anyone. The Huracan is the cousin in a wife beater, loud and obnoxious and everyone is nervous they my make a scene.

You cant go wrong with the R8. It's an incredible value for what you get. But I can be honest and say the lambo is a different level. That is why a lot of guys start with the R8 and end up with the next car being a Huracan or McLaren...etc. The edge is just not there. Which is actually a good thing if you want to drive it a lot.
