Breathalizer will be mandatory for all new cars sold by 2026

"It's one of the mandates along with a burst of new spending aimed at improving auto safety amid escalating road fatalities in the $1 trillion infrastructure package that President Joe Biden is expected to sign soon.

Under the legislation, monitoring systems to stop intoxicated drivers would roll out in all new vehicles as early as 2026, after the Transportation Department assesses the best form of technology to install in millions of vehicles and automakers are given time to comply."

There are going to be loads of drunk as$holes killing themselves on motorcycles starting bout that time.

They'll just buy pre '26 cars, there's plenty out there but they'll increase in value. Bonus is the cost of a new car will go up a few grand for the new tech

more stupid laws and more restriction of rights of law abiding citizens. When an illegal commits a DUI, its a "minor misdemeanor" not worthy of deportation, but now every law abiding US citizen has to use a breathlyzer to start their own car and that chit dont even work right half the time.

I have a 2021 Ford with lane keeping that already kinda does that: the system steers itself to keep you inside lane lines. If it detects you weaving and frequently crossing lines, it starts shaking the steering wheel and recommends pulling over

This, can also detect tired driving. Honestly, this kind of technology is going to save so many lives. I do worry about it being used in a negative way. It will start if your registration or insurance isn't paid/expires. Then they start linking it to traffic violations where you don't pay your fine, then parking tickets, and soon they have it linked to income tax payments and child support. After a while you make a cheeky post on the Misc or misgender some tranny and now your car won't move.

Here's an idea, if these ****gotsare so concerned with holding people responsible then let's put an addendum on this law that says that if politicians make or enact policy which ends up causing demonstrable harm like job loss, inflation, diminished economic growth or competitiveness, etc. we hold them accountable for all of the downstream effects like increased substance abuse, domestic violence, petty crime, and the like.

I guarantee that there will be a black market for ripping that chit out. I haven't drank alcohol in over 5 years and would be first in line to modify the vehicle. What they dont consider is that there will be ways around it. Drunks will have their kids blow. People will take them out.... When you are mandated by court to blow, there is a camera that makes sure it's you that's blowing. There is no way they can enforce that chit large scale.

Breathalyzers aren't accurate though. I passed one after crashing my car drunk. Imagine it says you're 0.01 off and you gotta wait 30 minutes before you can drive because it's wrong.

But for sure, it will be branded as "Ford powered by Apple" type of thing. What's sadly ironic is it will probably slip in like Goose said in the name of safety and/or convenience and by enabling sloots to take selfies for the 'gram while they're driving, any potential motor vehicle fatalities that would be "prevented" by introducing this technology to the market will be offset immediately. This is another microcosm of how societies slowly kill their own quality of life.

5-10 years ago we had cheap, reliable cars that could go like 250k miles without anything breaking.

Now the entry point for new cars is like $10k higher and we've mandated CVT transmissions, start/stop technology, and soon this. You're gonna be paying $40k for a Honda Accord that has chit breaking and disabling the car by year 2.
