Call from HR
So, my grandpa passed away last Monday. I email HR last Sunday and say I won’t be in the office tomorrow to spend time with him while he’s in hospice care. Anyways, he died Monday morning and I took that Tuesday off for bereavement. I filled out my time card on Friday and used Monday and Tuesday for bereavement (we get 3 days).
She called me this morning and asked when my grandpa died to see if my bereavement day I used on Monday was valid, or if I needed to switch it to a sick day.
How fukd is that? I’m pissed off and going to her boss to complain when I settle down. Imagine having the audacity to make that phone call. Fukn pissed off.

At one of my old jobs, the boss was a dick when my grandpa died. My grandma had died 3 months earlier and he said I already had taken time off for bereavement earlier. I submitted the bereavement request anyway and HR told him I was okay to take it, lol.
Then I wanted some vacation days off a few months later and he wouldn't approve because I had just taken some time off for my grandpa's funeral a few months earlier. Hated that dickhead.

Just say it is personal. They are creating a liability for themselves getting all up in your health business. Tell them it's just AIDS and no big deal.

Sorry for being brass tacks here - but is their some company policy on how many days related to a personal tragedy/ranking how “bad” it is? Who cares if it was one day or other - anything in the immediate week maybe 2 weeks seems insane to question.
Absolute try to get her in as much trouble for this as possible.

First sorry to hear about your grandpa brah. That is always a tough loss.
Honestly it just sounds like she wants to classify the time off correctly.
We have specified time off to assist sick family and separate bereavement policies. So when the person is alive there is a separate group of days and after the person is dead there is anther policy in effect. Might be sensitive to ask but she needs to classify it all properly.

Time to leave that company.
My employer, despite strong policy and constant training about not giving out passwords due to the sensitive nature of things we have access to, constantly asks for my password to "fix timecard issues" that have to happen NOW. Wont be surprised when the FBI comes knocking on their door.

If an employee at my company tried to use his sick time to take his dog to a vet, I would tell HR to be skeptical of any time reported off for anything other than vacation.
You earn your vacation, everything else is granted by the company, and you abused sick time. You're on the chit list now.
