Life is good post! Proud dad moment. Son racing VIR track day [pics and vid]

Just finished out last track day of season tues. Ended on a high note of doing VIR. Since COVID, I have gone a little overboard with the 'car' thing'. I got into tracking cars and soon added a 'track' car to my garage since tracking my Huracan is not really practical.

What a great way to finish the season. My son and I prepped a lot in the sim but VIR is a VERY technical track. We ran the full "grand course" which is 3.2 miles.

What an amazing thing to share with my son. Watching him race is fills me with joy. He is only 14 and out there getting it. I am not sure how many 14 year olds have ever run VIR full course, but I dont think he will ever forget this.

We transitioned to a manual car and this really is his 3rd time driving manual. Since we cant practice anywhere but a race track. He is doing pretty good and I know he will become a much better driver than I am. He just has an instinctual knack for it. He coaches me on my lines and braking points in the sim already.

Thanks for sharing in this moment with me. Still on a high from Tues. Hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving.

My daughter is turning 18 in a few days and she has driven all my cars but she has no interest in going fast. I scared her when she was 15 with her permit and made her go a little too fast in an R8 I had.

My son...well he has no issues.This was from this summer. I have posted this a few times . This was his first time EVER driving a car. I put him in my 860hp huracan. By turn 3 he was hitting 130



Then him in my orange lotus tracking down a S2000 driven by my buddy.
This was his first time ever driving a manual car. And he did it on the race track!

Know you are joking...but you dont double clutch in a trans w/ synchros. Also the synchros of the 6 speed in this car dont like to be rushed and I am teaching my son to let the trans shift at the pace it wants to. Over the winter I am doing a motor build and will look to pick up a trans. They make a gearset which can take the forces of faster shifting, but you are about 7k into it by the time you are said and done. Considering I am doing about 15k in mods, parts alone with me doing the work, I am holding off on modding the trans. That may very well come soon since on the track at the power levels I will be hitting, I will likely destroy 3 or 4th gear by the end of next track season.
On the street, it would be fine, but track driving puts a lot more strain on a car.


This is certainly a fun journey and I look forward to this winter of taking the car down and modding it with my son and I doing it together.
So in 6 months he gets to start divers ed. I wonder if they are going to teach him about proper apex of a turn or getting the car to rotate

I told him if he keeps his crap in order, that the lotus is his to drive. A little crazy of a car for kid, but as a parent, being able to give your kids more than you had is what it is all about. I grew up lower middle class, and my fist car was $350 rusted out Impala that I 'modded' with 14 cans of black spray paint!




Not a bad step up for him.

I grew up knowing all I wanted to do was race but family didn’t have the money to get me into carts or anything like that.
Wife is pregnant now and I’m hoping for a little dude who has a passion for driving like me.

I will share with you something. When you are lucky enough to become a parent, watching your kids get to experience things will bring you far more joy and excitement than anything ever has in your life. You wont for a second feel like you missed out on anything!

I am 48 and this year is the first time I ever tracked a car. And as you can probably tell, I have no regrets and dont feel bad or that I 'missed out'.

Congrats on the new baby. Mine are 17 and 14. Life will change, and you will realize just how unimportant your desires are as you look for a better future for your kids.



Just a touch of advice no one gave me. Support your wife. I was not prepared to have kids. I should have done more as a husband and father in the early years. Mostly supporting my wife more. It drives a wedge in almost every couple I know. Some marriages survive, but many dont. About the time the youngest kid is 3-5....people look at each other and decide to cheat or leave. Keep your marriage with your wife the center of your life. Support her and do the best you can even though nurturing an infant may not be something you feel you know how to do by instinct.

Good luck. Married 20 years here and the happiest I have ever been, and still crazy about my wife. I am glad she never left me. She probably had every right. I was not out at bars or chasing women, but for years I was a work-a-holic and did not give her the attention or support she needed. One of the very few regrets of my life.....

Yep. He is just hitting puberty now. He has shown some interest, but I am not the type to push anything. Having a dad that looks like me I recognize is a little weird. But my daughter has really taken to training which is awesome!

GT500 is a very capable track car. We were racing at VIR which is one of the most technical track in North America. But we race out of Carolina Motorsports Park in South carolina lot. Only an hour drive for me. Lots of tracks around. I am lucky enough to run with a group of guys that we privately rent out the tracks for ourselves. That is how I am able to get my son out there.

As an example we had 35 guys at VIR split in 2 groups. Most events there generally have 150-200 drivers with 50+ on track at any one time. VERY thankful to have a great group of friends that are cool with my son running next to their cars.

Thanks guys and I appreciate all the super nice comments. I know the misc is sometimes known for otherwise, but life exists outside from behind the keyboard and it is pretty good.

On the topic of this thread, having kids is the single greatest thing I have ever done. I am ridiculously lucky to have found a girl like my wife. She is so many things and the reason I am the man I am today. We have a very traditional family. My wife quit working before she got pregnant, but she has had the toughest job in the family and has worked way harder than I ever have. She is stunningly beautiful without even trying and wants for nothing material. I have been motivated to make a good life for us. There are no power struggles in my home. Life is easy when you both start with the same values, and you BOTH think of the others happiness before your own.

It's a tough world today. Only advice I have is find someone with the values you have if you want to marry. Figure it out BEFORE, because kids only make things harder. They will find the weakness in anything and erode them until they are huge issues. Drop all the 'alpha' bs and be a man that knows how to treat a woman. If she does not appreciate it and only likes 'bad boys', move on. She does not have the self respect required to expect to be treated well. Marriage is a 50/50 and if you dont think the girl and what she wants is more important than what you want, move on. You have to be committed to this also.

Even with all that, it still takes work and commitment. But it is worth it.

As for my kids, I am super lucky. Again, they have a great mom, what do you expect. My daughter has taken up the lifting bug. I got her a set of bumpers and she works out with me from time to time. She is strong for a 110lb girl. She also has my drive and is relentless when she wants something. A few caps from some of my stories. Yea...I am a proud dad!
