Keep in mind, a vast majority of min wage earners are the youth (16 to about 30). By median age, 75% of people pull themselves out of poverty, meaning, at that point, minimum wage is now meaningless to them. So when you're referring to minimum wage, realize that these are young individuals with no skills, experience, education, and extremely low output because they are new to the workforce. Low wages actually compel individuals to further than education, skills, and experience. Making them comfortable will likely have the opposite effect.

That's 203.47$ per month left, for thrift store clothes. After that, you can save for a forklift license (one example of a quick certification to boost your income), and start saving a lot more for further progress. Technical school? And I really couldn't care less if prices go up. For me it's working fine. Great even.

When I started working, I started above minimum wage. Due to my work ethic and merit, I got annual raises. But hold on...around that time minimum wage increased from 6:40 here to about 10.00/hr. No matter how hard I worked, there was buddy fuk head who was useless just doing the minimum, and getting consistently paid a dollar an hour less than me. And he had to just show up...as he got paid more, I made less.

Now that I am managing a company, and making good money on salary, those same useless people get paid even more despite being useless and having no work ethic.

If you want the real problems to go away, force people to work or starve, don't give them guaranteed money for menial work. The problems will straighten themselves out right quick.

Or like you say, agree the system isn't currently helping anyone, and agree it's because of rising minimum wages, social programs, and liberal safety nets that have infected the western world.

900g bag of beans - 3$ for about 10, 1 cup servings
1kg bag of oats - 3.49$ for about 11, 1 cup servings
Dozen of eggs - 3$ for 6, two egg servings
2.5 kg bag of whole wheat flour - 8$, with the yeast, for about a month of daily pita breads
Pork and minced meat often goes on sale for 2.99$/lb - good for about 4, 3 oz servings
Milk 6$/4L here (expensive), good for 8, 2 cup servings

These are prices over here (from what I understand, groceries are cheaper in the states), brand names, in CAD. So if you buy no name, in the US, it is probably even cheaper. I can go on listing items.

Yes you don't get a wide variety of veggies or fruits on a budget, but onions, garlic, apples, frozen spinach, beets, green cabbage, etc are all cheap options and they often go on sale. It requires initial planning, but it becomes 2nd nature very quickly.

And yes I recognize that food prices have inflated, which is an issue, but you can still budget and eat well if you aren't financially well off.

I think it is location dependent. In California yu couldn't make it on $15 an hour because of taxes rent costs etc. But $15 an hour somewhere like New Mexico or Indiana, I could make it, might even be better off than I am now

the federal minimum wage hasn't changed since 2009 yet everything has gone up in price. That's more than 10 years of inflation.

I think companies are just greedy. if they could get away with paying people $2/hour they would.

That being said, i don't think a $15 minimum wage would be a bad thing but I want my wage to go up as well.

lol you dumb cuck that is exactly what wont happen. Your purchasing power erodes, their wage goes "up" and the elites have no effect on them.

retards out here thinking the CEOs are going to personally take the cut out of their pay to pay for higher min wage, they already have contracts locked in.

The people making 16-30 an hour are who really get fuked because they get no raise but their costs all go up.

They keep talking about all these 30-50 year olds with children on min wage. So if you have been in the workforce for 10-20 years and have never developed any skills in ANYTHING and are basically a walking slab of meat who could be replaced by any warm body with an IQ over 80 then how is that the realm of the government to intervene? and why should all the upper lower class and lower middle class have to take a hit on their purchase power to bail you out?

Minimum wage is supposed to be for highschool to about less than 25 yr old workers.
If you are 25 yr old and still working for minimum pay, then there is something wrong with you and not the system.

A lot of people age 26 and below are still under their parent's medical insurance, phone plans, and still live with them.
My son is 22 yr old and still has 1 semester in college. He is under my medical plans, phone plans, and my roof while working at home depot for minimum pay.
He bought his own car, buys his own groceries, and pays a portion of his car insurance from his pay and it's not cheap here in Jersey. He's ok with his minimum pay at his current living status.

Now when he finishes his college, I expect him to apply for a better job and start planning for himself to be on his own. If he is still working for minimum pay a year after graduating, then I'll consider him failing.

Skilled vs unskilled labor. Anyone can be a cashier at McDonald's, I was one, and I was paid $6.50/h, and that was about correct for how hard the work was. Every single time I go to McDonald's they get my order wrong, and I always think to myself, they want $15 an hour, and can't even press three buttons on a screen correctly.

I went through Wendy's a couple of weeks ago. Ordered a Big Bacon Classic without ketchup.

What did I get?

A Big Bacon Classic without anything BUT ketchup. No lettuce, tomato, anything except the meat and cheese. But plenty of ketchup.

These dumb cocksuckers don't deserve 3 dollars an hour, let alone 15. I can't wait until the robots take over these pissant jobs.

This is a lot to unpack.

Well when the minimum wage was established under the Fair Labor Standards Act it was meant to protect workers from predatory employers and establish a "floor for wages and a ceiling for hours worked".
When, in 1933, President Roosevelt asked Frances Perkins to become Secretary of Labor, she told him that she would accept if she could advocate a law to put a floor under wages and a ceiling over hours of work and to abolish abuses of child labor.

The bill -- the second that Perkins had "tucked" away -- was a general fair labor standards act. To cope with the danger of judicial review, Perkins' lawyers had taken several constitutional approaches so that, if one or two legal principles were invalidated, the bill might still be accepted. The bill provided for minimum-wage boards which would determine, after public hearing and consideration of cost-of-living figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, whether wages in particular industries were below subsistence levels.

Generally, the bill provided for a 40-cent-an-hour minimum wage, a 40-hour maximum workweek, and a minimum working age of 16 except in certain industries outside of mining and manufacturing. The bill also proposed a five-member labor standards board which could authorize still higher wages and shorter hours after review of certain cases.

Proponents of the bill stressed the need to fulfill the President's promise to correct conditions under which "one-third of the population" were "ill-nourished, ill-clad, and ill- housed."
A little about what the market found to be acceptable:
Advocates of higher labor standards described the conditions of sweated labor. For example,a surveyby the Labor Department's Children's Bureau of a cross sectionof 449 children in several States showed nearly one-fourth of them working 60 hours or longer a week and only one-third working 40 hours or less a week. The median wage was slightly over $4 a week.23
To put that $4 a week into perspective:
President Roosevelt expressed a similar sentiment in a "fireside chat" the night before the signing. He warned:"Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, ...tell you...that a wage of $11 a week is going to have a disastrous effect on all American industry."
Executive Pay: $5,000 a week [assuming a 5 day week]

The Most Vulnerable Workers: $4 a week with 2/3rds working over 40 hours

If I were to take a stab at what went wrong I would say that the proposed system of labor boards reviewing industries must have been ditched since we haven't seen an increase in a decade.

Sure, but what are the consequences of McDonalds and all other fast food stores shutting down? Now, the average person will have to spend about 2hrs of their 15hr day cooking. On a national scale, thats millions of hours devoted to cooking, instead of getting other work done.

Its not automated bro. We have a gas station called Quiktrip here in MO and they have little kitchens that will sell you pizzas when you order them. Just looking at that, it can never be automated.

Again, the wages you posted are based on their market value, NOT based on cost of living. Not based on your idea of "success". Get a job at Amazon if you want. Its not easy labor, let me tell you. They work their arses off. Demand for Amazon labor sky rocketed as a result of, guess? Government intervention. It created a monopoly in which Bezos was willing to pay more for his employees to meet demand. Not all of these businesses benefited from the shutdowns like Amazon did. Keep that in mind. In fact, many of them are HURTING because of the shutdowns.
OK but from my experience with the previously mentioned situation, a lot of companies ARE hurting for more people. Nobody is willing to work for them because the wages are too low, andcompanies are not willing to negotiate salary. That's the main issue here. A lot of employers are not willing to raise their wages or salaries to compete in the job market. More applicants than openings? Applicants need to compete to get the job. More openings than applicants? Employers need to compete to get the best candidate in the door for the position. It's basic economics, yet companies aren't willing to play by those rules. Hell, I got a few friends & family members who work for employers that simultaneously whine that they can't fill positions, but also when an interested applicant shows up, they (the employer) are not willing to shell out the extra 8-10k/year that the applicant is asking for.

It's simply the cost of doing business in a competitive market, yet again employers are refusing to budge. They have existing staff who can fill the gaps in the meantime, I guess. From what I hear those people aren't willing to cover 3 positions, so they may jump ship soon too...

Biggest issue with the constant whining over minimum wage is its something that should only technically affect people from 16-25 years old. What kind of person works dead end jobs for their entire life then whines the government needs to give them a raise?

Had this epiphany when I was 18 working with some guys in their 40s. (Manual labor job). By the time I was 20 I was getting paid more then dudes that had been in that industry for 20+ years. Mainly because of work ethic + innovative ideas that upped productivity. Finally got tired of being surrounded by losers and put myself through college.

It was kind of weird being put supervising dudes over 2x my age that had more experience in the industry then I'd been alive.

Average minimum wage-cel needs to figure out how to scale a career and their skillset.

You can't really compare yall minimum wage. Canada's either. If you make 100K per year in Australia or Canada you're probably not as financially secure as an American in the mid-west making 50K per year.

In America as long as you stay out of major/coastal cities you can do quite well as a single brah on 60-65k per year. Good enough to buy a 1500+ square foot 3 bed 2 bath house (newer construction) on your single salary in like 90% of America.
