Spent Sunday traversing a snow capped ridge in the White Mtns NH (Pics)
It's not officially winter yet, but winter conditions are certainly here in the mountains.
Fresh snow fell the previous 2 nights so even the trailhead was covered.
Nearly 2 miles of the trek was above treeline on the ridge, crossing the summit of 3 different peaks.
Views were limitless- the only thing hampering visibility was the curvature of the earth.
Temps were in the low teens, however the ridge was getting blasted by wind gusts that were bitter cold. A fellow climber had a gauge and he measured a 34mph gust (and we had stronger ones as we went). I was glad to have my heavy expedition mitts to keep the hands warm and a balaclava to protect the face.
(more pics to follow)

Nice! Ever feel like attempting a one-day Presidential Traverse trek out there in winter?

It's hard for me to step away from my company last minute, I typically have to plan time off a week or two in advance.

the White Mtns don't have the elevation of other peaks in the world, but the terrain is brutal and the weather is some of the worst in the world.
every year there's people, even world class mountaineers, that come here with that attitude and end up dying.
Mt Washington has the title "the most dangerous small mountain in the world". I just read a book about all the deaths over the years on it, some of them are nuts with the way the weather turned.

it's all about layers in the winter. Always stopping to add or subtract- can't let yourself get overheated when you're ascending because once that wind hits you up top, it'll freeze you up if you're sweaty.
I run three layers up top- long sleeve base with a hood, an insulated midlayer then a soft shell jacket to help break the wind. I also carry a puffy down parka to put on if it's crazy cold or if I need to stop for an extended period
on the lower, I only run two layers- long underwear base then a pair of softshells. I carry down pants but I've never needed to put them on around here.
two layers again for the hands- a thin glove liner and a big insulated pair of gloves to go over them. The liners are nice because it gives you some protection if you have to take the outer shell off to do anything (take pictures etc). I also carry a heavy pair of expedition mitts that are warm as fuk (the same ones they use on Everest). Not as mobile as gloves, but they're warm.
Then wool hat, ski googles, balaclava etc...

Dassit mane. Great pics, it's a beautiful area. Got any other hikes planned? I need to get out and do more this winter rather than hole up so much.

sock liners with wool socks over. I have insulated hiking boots that are decent most of the time unless it's an extra long trek or severe weather in which I case I have a pair of mountaineering double boots:

Views were limitless- the only thing hampering visibility was the curvature of the earth.
Temps were in the low teens, however the ridge was getting blasted by wind gusts that were bitter cold. A fellow climber had a gauge and he measured a 34mph gust (and we had stronger ones as we went). I was glad to have my heavy expedition mitts to keep the hands warm and a balaclava to protect the face.
