Any film production gurus here? How to achieve 60s classic black and white

I want to recreate this look:



Not just the black and white but the low resolution as well. How do you do it? Do you need to have a 60s era camera?

You can come close.

You need a cameral that will shoot at 24 fps.
And it needs to have good contrast.
Then as many megapixels you can get.

I'm sure there are filters/effects that will help too.


Make sure you use your lighting right

Key light.
Fill lighting.
Back lighting.

Keep your shadows deep... keep highlights there.. but don't go crazy.

Thanks for the info...damn I was hoping it was just a simple filter you can add in post production, you'd think it'd be that easy but I guess not

It's actually not low resolution. It's very high analog resolution.
Actual film has a much deeper depth of field than digital video.

But I am sure there are filters that will help. But you have to understand the basics of how they shot film back then.

Wait have you really asked how to achieve "low resolution"?

I take back what I said even gay Indian bodybuilders know how to do that!

(It's called down sampling and simple re-encoding at a lower resolution does it. The rest is done via filters applied during the re-encoding).

But the Twilight Zone isn't really lower resolution. Maybe some copies are. But analog film generally has much better resolution than digital. That is why I'm saying get as many megapixels as you can.
Eventually digital will have higher resolution available to the common man. But right now it's super high end equipment.

I did. I made some films and video.
But when I did it, you couldn't get a good camera with 24 fps. Video is 30 fps. soooooooooooooo... it looks like video.
That slight flicker we are used to with stuff shot on 24 fps is what makes a movie look like a movie.

You can see some episodes of twilight zone that are shot on video and they have the sitcom/tv feel when you are watching them. That is 30 fps

That clip you posted is 24 fps

I get you but everything we see now is digitally encoded. The YouTube video OP linked to has a max resolution of 360p.

Also 4K is standard at the lower end now and it's in the 35mm film ballpark. Google reckons film is 5.6mp though will depend on sensitivity, brand etc.

Yep, this is true too. Resolution on old T.V.s and even movies would affect the quality. Well maybe not movies. But if your source is close to what he wants the translation can uphold.
