Mirrorlands - Ed Pulford – 6/10
Mirrorlands is a metaphor for the similarities between Russia and China at the boarder as a mirrored affect. The author begins in Moscow and takes a train East to Siberia to various boarder cities and towns, eventually making his way to Beijing. Russia is separated into two halves, East and West or European and Asian.
Various subjects comparing and contrasting the two global juggernauts are covered ranging from their history of world leaders, wars, territory disputes, the sharing of socialist/communist views, etc. Many interesting parallels from this such as China's rapid growth by having 10 times the population and much better agricultural land helping them to propel past a once dominate Russia, who they once feared (Beijing actually built over 30 miles of underground bunker in fear of a Russian attack that never came). China gained in technology as well developing the biggest and fastest rail line in the world while the Trans Siberian train has become outdated while a once an important innovation. Russia to this day does hold valuable resources (that China would love to exploit) but they are primarily more focused towards Europe in the West. Despite China pulling away from Russia and becoming more prosperous and modern they still are closely intertwined in ideology and history to this day.
My problem with this lies more with the author than the historical content. The author (an Englishman) doesn't really know what he wants this book to be. He flips around from the past to the present, talks about his traveling companions he meets, and quickly moves on from, while giving a dry history lesson. The whole thing doesn't go together well and doesn't seem thought out too well either.

31. No Way Out - (Major) Adam Jowett and Geraint Jones
This is a first hand account of the frantic siege of the compound at Musa Qala in Helmand Province.
32. The Last Kingdom - Bernard Cornwell
A novel told in a first-person perspective from a young Earldorman, who ends up fighting with both the Danes and the West Saxons during the Danish raids in the later part of the 9th century. Yes, it does mention Ubba, Ivar the boneless, and TWO Ragnar's (although neither is Lodbrok).

A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini – 9/10
From the same author as The Kite Runner I found this to be, not quite as engaging, but still an incredible read. Hosseini once again writes about growing up in Afghanistan in the 1970s and up to the more present day. This time around the focus is more on a woman's point of view where the hardships are much worse. What I really like about Hossseini's writing is how it can transport you to a place you are unfamiliar with (Afghanistan) but somehow you understand it. Even though this is a sad story it's very well written and rich with insightful sensitivity.

72 Lifespan - why we age and why we don't have to
73 No One Goes Alone
74 Termination Shock
72 is a nonfiction book about some amazing research that the author believes will result in people living to 150 within our lifetimes. The third part of the book where the author explores the potential impacts of this (ethically, environmentally etc) drags, but I enjoyed this.
73 is the first fiction book by Erik Larson. It's just ok but was light and quick.
74 is Neil Stephensons latest 700 page doorstop of a novel, and is about a billionaire texan trying to reverse climate change by firing sulphur into the stratosphere using the world's largest gun. Like all of Stephenson it's full of actual real world science of how this would actually work.

It's pretty smart, pretty violent, and kicks all kinds of ass.

I wish I have 10 more years to read all these books in addition to those on my already existing must-read list.
Maybe I could use some of those AI and VR technology to prolong my intellectual life until I finish reading all the good books in this real world.

And Accelerando by Charles Stross is an incredibly smart novel that is also available free from his website, but it is HARD, HARD scifi. If you're not into ridiculously thinky sci-fi you won't enjoy it.
Like, breaking down the solar system into a Matrioshka Brain, explaining the Fermi paradox as a bandwidth issue, level thinky. It's a ridiculously ambitious novel set before, during, and after a technological singularity.

I'm in the middle of 5 books right now.
None of them require focused/consecutive reading... They're non-fiction.
What is the max you guys have rotating at one time?

You might as well read Gibson's short story collection Burning Chrome before that. It has two short stories based in the same world as his Sprawl trilogy - "Johnny Mnemonic" (yup) and "Burning Chrome." As I recall, the collection starts with "Mnemonic," which doesn't flow very well but started him down the cyberpunk path. Then there are several short stories in various sci-fi genres, some of them co-written with his friends. One of those, "Dogfight" cowritten with Michael Swanwick is just ****ing awesome. The collection ends with "Burning Chrome," where Gibson really found his cyberpunk flow before deciding to write Neuromancer.

Watched Dune the other day.
Just finished audiobook Dune #1 - theatrical version.
On to the next 5 books that were originally written by Frank Herbert.
There are additionally 2 books in that series that are written by Brian Herbert.
And I recently bought a Kobo Libra 2 aswell.
Compared to my Paperwhite 2013 edition it was really pleasant having both night mode (black background / white text), warmer white and automatic adjustment of brightness and color. Also nice that it has usb-c and is waterproof.

I have finished 24 books since January 1st.
I started 18 others and not finished them. Some I will never finish because they were awful, and others I'm in the midst of.
I don't like wasting time on a book if there's other stuff that captivates me.
Top 7 books this year, in order:
1.One Man's View of the World: Lee Kuan Yew- Amazing book, 11/10. I could not put this down, it is my favorite read of 2021 and it's not even close, Probably a top-3 book of all time for me. Lee Kuan Yew - leader of Singapore - lays out his perspective on the world: culture, economy, trade, language, policy. So many mind-blowing things I never thought of.
2.100 Baggers: Stocks That Return 100-to-1 and How To Find Them- best investing read of the year, but FAR FROM the best investment book of all time. Very captivating and easy to read. Covers a lot of different topics in regards to investing.
3.The Dhandho Investor: The Low-Risk Value Method to High returns- Fun book that simplifies the complexities of business, and the scaled-down explanation of investment returns in small business. Explains why some entrepreneurs succeed, and others fail.
4.Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas- I've seen the movie like 4 times, and the book is way better. Hilariously funny. I was crying laughing at many parts. This is a great book to read if you're mildly buzzed.
5.Richer, Wiser, Happier: How the World’s Greatest Investors Win in Markets and Life- Massive rabbit-hole book. Lots of different people in this book are discussed, and you will want more after this book is finished.
6.Tap Dancing to Work: Warren Buffett on practically everything, 1966-2013- Awesome timeline of Warren Buffett, the GOAT investor. So many insights and lightbulbs in this book. History repeats.
7.This Is Not Fame: A "From What I Re-Memoir"- Short stories from the alcoholic life of trainwreck comedian Doug Stanhope. Hilarious book, and insanely well-written for someone who seems pretty dumb.
These^ were the notable ones that I'd say people should consider reading because they easily CAPTIVATED me. Especially if you're a financial market person.
Book #1 EVERYONE on earth should read.

LMAO @ this article from Hunter S. Thompson.
So god damn funny. If you like this super-short story, you'd love Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

33. The Pale Horseman - Bernard Cornwell.
The second of the 'King Alfred' trilogy. This outing tells the tale of Wessex struggling to survive as the last Saxon Kingdom in the land. Alfred and a small company of followers are forced to occupy a tiny village in the middle of a swamp-land, before calling the banners and gathering an army for a showdown with those pesky Danish invaders. Once again, Cornwell educates the reader about history, whilst providing an exciting tale of battle and courage.

Just finished 'hard truths to keep Singapore going'.
If any of you read my FAVORITE book of '21, "one man's view of the world", and loved it, or even felt a connection with Lee kuan yew, then read 'hard truths' next.
The guy was an absolute beast. If every world leader was this effective and intelligent we'd be living in the future.

I'm re-reading this for fun.

Mexican Gothic – Silvia Moreno-Garcia – 8.5/10
I had high expectations for last years Goodreads horror book of the year, but I didn't really know what to expect. I was not disappointed and somewhat surprised how well this was written and where this was going. The story itself was a little slow to get into but still a delightful to read none the less. Wasn't really scary or anything though

This was my first fiction book from him. I really enjoyed his style.
Has anyone else read any books from him?

He has plenty to read if you like his style. I think people who like the Southern atmosphere and setting would also like author Greg Iles.
Edit: I started Snow Crash last night.
Spoiler!
Lol at some badass pizza Deliverator in the beginning.
I think I'll like this one. I like the style and flow so far.
