U.S. inflation hit a 39-year high of 6.8%


U.S. inflation reached a nearly four-decade high in November, as strong consumer demand collided with pandemic-related supply constraints.

The Labor Department said the consumer-price index—which measures what consumers pay for goods and services—rose 6.8% in November from the same month a year ago. That was the fastest pace since 1982 and the sixth straight month in which inflation topped 5%.

The so-called core price index, which excludes the often-volatile categories of food and energy, climbed 4.9% in November from a year earlier. That was a sharper increase than October’s 4.6% rise, and the highest rate since 1991.

The November prices trend came before the emergence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, which poses a new threat from a pandemic that is well into its second year.

On a monthly basis, the CPI increased a seasonally adjusted 0.8% in November from the prior month, about the same as October’s 0.9% increase.

Prices for vehicles, rent, furniture and airline fares rose last month. Some energy prices showed signs of easing, but gasoline rose by 6.1% for the second straight month. Prices for recreation and communication declined in November.

Hi

I think there needs to be some clarification, in regards to these comments.

Inflation is an event that lags.

When trillions of dollars are printed out of nowhere, and there are not an equal amount of goods and services added to the economy, that inflation just doesn't magically reveal itself that day.

It takes months.

The inflation really started when the Trump admin shut the economy down, on Dr. Fauci's behalf, and started to run the printing presses, so the economy wouldn't completely collapse after putting it on a literal pause.

Unfortunately, the sum of money that was printed was much, much more than what people would have ended up netting from their incomes and revenues.

So, in conclusion, there is a link between these high rates of inflation and mean tweets

For my company raw materials has skyrocketed in price. Steel, wood, laminate, adhesives... you name it. Freight has almost doubled in price.

We have to make up the difference with price increases.

If you can get it at all. We've got some big orders that are going to be in jeopardy because lead times for parts that are normally a few days are now 6 months.

Yea if you're shipping anything from overseas lead times are insane. And once it gets on the dock it can sit there for 2-4 weeks because of failed liberal policies.

Luckily we order all our supplies domestically but lead times and prices have gone up here as well.

Just a reminder, too. The longer the Fed suppresses rates at 0% the worse this is going to get.

Even when the Fed begins to hike rates, it will take years to slow this down. We could see inflation easily go past 10%.
Short-term rates that are kept below the rate of inflation – so negative “real” interest rates – are considered very stimulative and inflationary. And it takes monetary policies about a year or two to have the first impact on inflation. You cannot just turn the dial on inflation. This is going to be a long battle.

The Central Bank of Brazil has embarked on a series of shock-and-awe rate hikes in order to not fall further behind. The Bank of Mexico has largely mirrored the Fed’s rhetoric, expecting this raging inflation to go away on its own somehow, but it has started to rase rates in June, very gingerly. And the Fed has made a verbal U-Turn, but is still running the money-printer nearly full blast and is still repressing its policy rates to near 0%.
Powell should be implementing emergency hikes now, but they are still running the printing presses.

Things are going to be getting much worse before they get any better.
