What does misc think about this chess drama? Nationalism?

So chess championship match just wrapped up between a guy from norway and a guy from russia. Norway brah is reigning champ and won decisively.

Chess players have “teams” that help them prep for games. On norway brahs team was a very strong russian player.

Russians now pissed and calling him a benedict arnold and a sell out ****ot.


Chess people from other countries saying russian brahs are being dickheads.





Thoughts? Keep in mind, this is an individual tourney, so has nothing to do with national team matches. Although the russians treat chess like an olympic sport.

Only Russia has this kind of national pride due to their history in chess, nobody else cares outside of Russia.

Tho Dubov may wanna stay away from any open windows for a while as he's living in Russia currently lol.

From what i understand, russian chess experts, GMs, coaches, and most probably also the russian fans lol.

Karjakin and the rest of the Russian chess establishment is in the wrong from my perspective, but let me say this. Chess in Russia has an intense connection to politics which does not exist in any other country, to my knowledge. This has been true since the 1940s, but it still happens now. Certain players are favored over others, certain chess schools are more prestigious than others, in the past there have been allegations of match-fixing and collusion in tournaments, etc. Chess in Russia is political, and if you are on the wrong side of the current powers-that-be it's going to be a rough ride. Dubov is going to live a much more difficult life going forward because of his participation as a second for Carlsen. Karjakin is a favorite of Putin and I would not be at all surprised if he is being used as a mouthpiece to speak for Putin to promote Russian solidarity.

Dubov was part of Magnus' team back in 2018 and agreed to be on this year's team even before the candidate's match where Ian won.

Also, you can't hate on Dubov. He's got that Balenciaga drip.
