Calories in- calories out is crap

I mean, yeah technically it could be right if you’re just assuming the person is crapping out the extra calories. There are tons of things that can affect how efficient the body is at utilizing what you put in it. For example, I started TRT this year and in 6 months I’ve gained a little over 7 pounds despite eating less. And I’m at a weight(180) that I was unable to hit even when I stuffed my face nonstop and lifted most days of the week. So the only logical explanation if you adhere to CICO is that I was literally sh!tting out unused calories.

Moral of the story is that, yes, most people should focus on their diet first, but there are lots of other factors like hormone levels and digestive health that will drastically change how your body uses calories. So it isn’t really as simple as some like to try to make it.

Eating 200 calories of spinach has a different effect than 200 calories of candy because blood sugar also affects body fat storage.

But your example in the OP is thrown off because of your cell tech.

But again, how would test throw it off if there are no calories in it? Either CICO applies to everyone or it doesn't.

It can work if you devote a large amount of energy to calculating your TDEE, or 'calories out', but you can never calculate it accurately. It's only necessary for the very top and bottom percentiles (i.e BB competitors and people who need to count so they stay under 2k cals and don't overeat)

Because it changed your TDEE. CICO applies to everyone but metabolism isn't consistent. Like you say there are a huge number of variables that can't be accurately accounted for.

e.g. eating seed oils will make you gain a lot more, or lose less weight than eating the equivalent calorie amount of coconut oil, because of energy metabolism, which is vastly more complicated than just insulin like the sloot said

CICO only applies if all other factors are identical - which they rarely are.

it only really helps to bring you at a certain baseline of muscle that you should be at if you had that amount of T naturally. You can still build muscle despite being on a calorie deficit. there is even research that people on dat dere creatine built muscle by not doing any physical activity but sitting on the couch. also, were you doing less activity doing those months? if you don't count that, then there's no way of really knowing how many calories were going in and out and whether or not you were consistent. It also ignores the fact that if you ate more, you probably would have gained more weight. 7 lbs in 6 months isn't a lot. Were you also tracking calories?

At the height of my attempt to gain weight I was stuffing my face all the time, to the point of being uncomfortable. I was tracking and hitting 4-5,000calories/day. Now most days I eat two meals/day and my total isn’t even close to 4,000. Yet despite that I have put on more weight(and good weight at that, not fat or substantial water). So where did all of my calories go before?

Stop your trt and see what happens to your weight. Theres your answer. Not rocket science. Your entire post here proves the point. Exogenous hormones is the reason.

So what you’re saying is that it isn’t just calories in vs calories out….

no she was right
eating seed oils vs coconut oil will just effect your cholesterol and heart helath but from an energy perspective its indifference because fat is fat when it comes to energy, carbs are carbs when it comes to energy, and protein is protein. Like I said, from an energy perspective. Also from a physique perspective fat is pretty irrelevant and wont change how you look, but it is obviously stupid to get all your fats from poor sources because your cholesterol will be **** and your chance of a heart attack and other health issues will be increased.

Insulin is more complicated because insulin resistance will ruin your nutrient partitioning of ALL calories and make you store more fat from the calories you consume, eating 100g carbs of fruit will not have the same effect as eating 100g of carbs from broccoli and potatos or eating 100g carbs from table sugar.

CICO ONLY applies to the broad term WEIGHT, it has NOTHING to do with bf%

Macronutrient numbers will reflect body composition , more protein will be more lean mass, more fat will be more fat mass, more carbs will be more energy and possibly more fat mass if excess amounts are eaten

micronutrients will effect health and on a smaller scale bodycomposition but only indirectly because of health factors.

It’s fact, but at the same time plenty of people are crapping out unused or underutilized calories. Two different people can eat a meal and it’s possible they use the calories completely differently from one another.

ITT OP goes on the sauce and is shocked that he puts on weight even at a caloric deficit or his TDEE is off now.

You can’t be this dense bro. Think about it. You’re adding in a hormone that helps put on size. What little bit of less calories you’re eating doesn’t offset that.

Body compositon 100x better when eating high protein low carb moderate fat than if I just ate the same calories of whatever.

Srs. Maybe for weightloss cals in cals out is legit, but ive been messing around with the macros and its just better overall when I am aware of what I am actually eating.

I don't think you have to be super meticulous, if you aren't competing, but I do think being cognizant of what you are putting into your body definitely makes things easier

well taking TRT if you were already low T will do that, still doesn't change the fact that energy balance still largely determines weight gain/weight loss. and that hormone levels can determine how that energy balance is partitioned. and doesn't change the fact that if you ate more, you probably would have gained even more weight. a lot of things can alter how much calories are burned and how they are used. the underlying principle is still CICO.

You guys are using simple CICO for weight gain?

I thought it was just a weight loss tool to help people have a baseline for losing weight. If you're only doing CICO, you plateau rather quickly it's not meant for long term gains/losses, it's more of a habit forming tool.
