Fuuuuu. Srs question, do these jobs offer benefits like 401k matching and health insurance, or is it basically you make your money and do your own thing?

It's not a 1099 role, enterprise sales is full time and most of those not only offer your basic benefits (and excellent ones at that) but unlimited PTO, adoption reimbursement, professional development stipend, executive coach, etc.

BetterUp even has sleep coaches lmao

But, the sky is the limit on your comp.

wonder if I need to consider a new career. I was thinking about an MBA to get into consulting a while ago, but didn't when I looked at execs pay in my industry and how many of them didn't have MBA's. So I didn't apply. And now I may be to old for it.

idk what to do.

OP I have often considered the same thing. I’ve been in tech consulting sales for 6 years and have averaged ~$300k the last 3 years. My company is small/mid size at 700 employees but I’ve been here since we were tiny.

So the income I have now comes with total flexibility, 20-30 hours/week depending on deal cycles, and a manager who doesn’t ask me for chit and has become a good friend. Would it be worth doubling the effort, potential stress, and restarting my book of business mostly from scratch to eventually get ~50% more income? The answer I always come up with is no.

It is quite rare - you're talking about top talent, the tip of the curve. <0.1% in the industry probably making $500k+.

It's likely the same story for these sales positions.

Are you having a down quarter or multiple quarters? I find myself considering it more often during lulls, as if the grass would be greener and I wouldn't be in the same lull if I was just selling Azure, AWS, GCP, etc. instead of where I'm at.

In 18 months from January 2019 through June 2020 I grossed over $600k. Obviously the thought of leaving never crossed my mind. During H2 2020 and earlier this year my pipeline and wins slowed way down due to the pandemic, along with my own lack of discipline at times. During that period, I had the same thought process at least weekly like you said. Things have turned up again drastically since then and I never even consider it anymore.

It's just human nature brah. I would challenge you to ask yourself if there is a path to becoming top 5% or top 1% at your current company and earning 50%+ more while maintaining similar levels of flexibility and time commitment. What habits would you have to implement and/or get rid of to optimize your time, your win ratios, your sales cycle length, etc.?

How do you get into Software Sales?

What type of experience is required to get into these positions?

I have been in project management for a while and have wanted to switch back into a sales career, however, difficult to find any information on software sales.

You could have the best product in the world but without sales you're fuked - Oracle and Salesforce software clearly speaks for itself but there is a reason both these companies largest operating expenses are sales and marketing - exceeding R&D by quite a large margin and in the case of SF sales and marketing exceeds R&D by 3x

I've worked in the space for 9+ years and these look pretty spot on? I've interviewed at several of these companies, have friends who work there, etc, and have worked at three of the companies in the "top 50" of this Repvue list. I work for a public company in the HR tech space that has the typical SaaS setup (SDR qualifies / does disco and passes to me)

I could see the "Top Performer" figures being a little inflated or unrealistic at some of them, but the Base Salary and OTE all look pretty spot on to me? (ded fkn Srs)

When you start out as an SDR (or an SMB AE if you're lucky) you just do a **** ton of cold calling, cold emailing, and "discovery calls". You then get to become an AE (Account Executive), who runs the meetings and presentations, closes the business, etc. (with complex software solutions it will be a team sell, with product specialists, sales engineers, implementation people etc. as part of the sales process.

The firs 3-5 yrs you do a lot of grunt work (cold calling cold e-mailing etc.)

I still do plenty of grunt work, but a lot less now (I have an SDR setting most of my meetings for me)

This year has been a down year for me, going to gross $200k this year -- obviously still great, but a $50k paycut from last year still stings. Having my best quarter ever though right now in Q4, and will have an $80k quarterly bonus hitting in January, so 2022 will be off to a hot start.

I hear you on riding out the ups and downs, and how making a move always seems like a great idea when you're having an off quarter or year.

I'm more just thinking about how if I really optimized my productivity at my current spot, I would probably cap out at around $400k, and that's if I got a few lucky bounces and huge deals lol. I probably lose 2 hrs a day of prime working time to walking my dog / going on hikes with her. I feel bad if shes just sitting aoriund watching me work all day lol.

In talking with friends, former co-workers, etc., it just sounds like the "ceiling" is way higher at a lot of spots. (ded fkn Srs)

I used to think this way, it’s a naive and limiting way a lot of young idealistic engineers think.

The real world rarely works this way. And even for products that do go viral by themselves, it can only help to market it.

Another piece to note is that sales engineers do a lot more than just pestering someone to buy a product. The majority of large enterprise software sales is finding technical fit, customizing your product, negotiation etc. Often from incoming, where the client reached out to the seller.

How long does it take to make $250k plus? Can you get there at 25? Or takes 10 plus years? How hard is it to get these jobs? I know medical device sales reps make a good Chunk, $200-300k, but it’s pretty brutal and they work their ass off.

speak for yourselves ****gets

op i suggest you pickup another $250k/year role and make $500k working a full 40 hour week

it’s a lot easier to mediocre in two jobs than be top .1% and clear $500k with 1.
