How is my coworker allowed to just stand around all day and do nothing?

He just stands there beside me and stares at me while I do my work on my computer

He doesn't talk at all unless I ask him something

I haven't seen him do anything or help with a single thing in over 5 years. He just moves stuff around

How is this possible?

I can tell you but we need to sit down and wind the clocks back. Specifically, to 2012.

The correct term for that is boss. Thats pretty much what they do all day.
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

So say something. Quit being a spineless idiot. Guaranteed if you say something and act alpha he will respond. He will at least pretend to do something.
