So I feel like I have 'been there, done that' and enjoyed this car the past year. Put 3000 miles on it in less than a year. All pleasure driving, so we got our fun with it. My supercharger and other mods are coming for my lotus in a couple days, when done, it will be a lot of fun and I will not feel like I dont have a toy.

So I am going to explore options. I have been leaning towards 720s but lots of nightmare stories about McLaren. But I know our dealer really well and he is making me an offer I cant refuse. After Christmas he is giving me one for a couple days to play with to see if I like it.

At the other end, I had considered building an Ultima RS like a member here has. Always loved those cars and I would enjoy building with my son. So I am open to ideas. My son really loves the 720s. I also have loved McLarens but never really considered them. But with the right dealer it might be something I consider.

Hector is going to be running 3 Honda Civics with spoon engines. And on top of that he just came into Harry's and he ordered 3 T66 turbos, with NOS, and a Motec system exhaust.

Will you end up making a profit for holding it a year (not taking into account for maint, just purchase price - selling price)?

Yea. EVERY car owner made money this past year. Even a Kia appreciated during last year. I bought the car right also, so I will probably make 60-70 on it.

Yea, I have always like them. I am on my second Lotus also, and since getting my widebody, I find myself driving the Huracan less and less. When the time comes to go out for a quick drive, I pick the lotus. It is MUCH slower, but more fun to drive. With the supercharger, the Huracan always puts me over 100 doing about anything. It goes 0-100 in under 5 seconds. So it is hard to truly enjoy it on the street. I have had it on the track as well, but I cant justify risking destroying it on the track. You have no insurance coverage on the track.

So I have found myself looking for something more raw than the Huracan. A 720s would fit that bill. In stock form 600lbs lighter and much less compromised from design.

The ultima is cool, but part of me has trouble putting 200k in a 'kit car'. It almost certainly would be a money losing proposition. Where I have owned a R8, a Gallardo Spyder 2 lotus elises and I will have made money on every car AND enjoyed them. I like that part of this 'game'. I like finding the right cars...etc.

But the ultima is where my heart is. I have a supercharger coming for the lotus in 2 days and I will be stripping down the entire car with a bunch of mods, suspension, engine, trans, clutch, supercharger...etc. If my son helps me on the work, then maybe I'll consider building one with the payoff being the time we get to spend together with it.

The lotus will be his. He does not have a license since he is 14, but he will have many hours behind the wheel on the track before he hits the street with it. On the funny note, I thought I could stripe the ultima to match the lotus

Nope....just a guy been married 20 years to a gorgeous wife and lucky enough to distract myself from time to time with some fun toys. Family first and my true happiness comes from them. Toys are cool too but have to keep your perspective. I have a KIA too, and I love it also.

Been there man. I have been self employed since 23. College drop out who moved south with zero. Clothes in garbage bags and milk crates driving a 15 year old truck. The struggle is good. Makes you appreciate things. I have a value for things and respect what a dollar means probably a lot more than most people. I live pretty conservatively compared to many. No debt, never had a loan or even a mortgage. I just always lived my life by the rule I wont buy it unless I can afford it. Might not be fully applicable as I know most people need a mortgage to buy a home, but that might be the ONLY good debt there is. As long as your income justifies the deduction. DONT play the debt game. It just makes the banks richer.

As for safety, outfitted the Lotus with Schroth ASM harnesses. He is a good kid and I think he will be a good driver on the street. He is already a VERY skilled driver on the track. Naturally he is better than me, but needs just a little more time on the track. I think by the end of next year, he will be beating my times. SUPER fun thing to get to share with him. Feel very appreciative to get to do these things.

Thanks man. The car thing is a lot of fun and it is really COVID that got me to dive in deeper. My son and I have made a lot of memories and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Lamborghini's, especially the Huracan is VERY reliable. It is not uncommon to see them with tons of miles with zero issues. I would say the Huracan is the most reliable of exoitcs. There is a car rental place that put 150k miles on one with only oil changes! They are amazing things. I also owned a gallardo which is what introduced me to the brand and after owning it for a while, I was not afraid. Lamborghini, especially modern ones, are probably the most predictable costs of ownership. Even Ferrari has stepped up their game with the 488 on. They now give 7 years of maintenance with any car. McLaren still is lagging in the reliability game, but they have improved from the 720 on.

0? I have made money on every sports car. Only been doing the nicer car thing 3 years. Went from R8 to Gallrado spyder, and now the Huracan. Also had a few lotus thrown in there and kept my lotus wide body as a fun track car. (putting about 20k in mods on it so dont expect to make money on it) I generally dont buy at market price. I am good at finding deals and being a cash buyer opens up a lot of opportunities. That said, it does not always work, but if you buy the right car, you can own these and drive them for less than a civic. Just have to have the cash to buy them. Now with the covid market, I will probably make 60-70k plus on the Huracan. I bought it right and the market has gone crazy. So I drove it for a year and 3000 miles and I make a nice chunk. But that is just luck and this crazy market we are in.

If I missed it my bad but I remember hearing a few years ago that the move with McLaren is to buy used because they don’t hold their value as well as most exotics.
Is that still the case? Or has the covid clown world shifted that too lol

And enjoy man! I’m selling my 04 GTO to my buddy. I had it 4 months and put roughly 2-3k on it. Fun car but I can’t really have a toy rn plus everytime I drive it I end up doing “I’m about to go to jail” speeds lol

McLaren had some issues a few years back. A lot of people forget, but the MP4 12C was their first ever car. Production problems and reliability were not good. Then they flooded the market with excess inventory. Prices tanked on a lot of the cars through dealer network issues. It was not uncommon to lose 100k in the first year on one.

Lots of things have happened to help that. Reliability and dealer network has greatly improved. I would say it is still a concern but not as bad as it was. The fact is that no one makes a better performing car than McLaren. So I am considering forming a relationship with the dealer. If I buy one, it will either be new or less than a year old likely. I am still considering options, but depending on the details, I may consider a 720s. I have a buddy with 765lt and another with a 600lt. Love both of them. I have always loved Mclaren, just been too afraid to own one. But a relationship with the dealer may change that for me. Otherwise I was going to think about possibly moving to the Ferrari family. I was given an 'invite' and to get in, I would spec a new Roma. Basically you cant just order a Ferrari and they are all built to order. Once you meet their requirements, they let you order nicer cars. I was given a direct invite to start with a spec to build Roma. 290k car. Kind of their lower level car. GT car w/ 612hp. Same engine in Pista makes 680 with different tune. I loved the car, but I dont know that I can commit to one brand, which is the downside of Ferrari ownership. And they control how long you have to hold them before you sell.

After owning that for 2 years I can move the any of the ferrari line and spec to order. I probably could not get a 2 mil limited production model, but I am not ordering cars like that anyway...

That’s good to know man, building a relationship is never a bad thing imo. Who you know goes far.
And I knew you had to be selected to buy a new Ferrari but didn’t know that they dictated how long you had to hold onto them. That’s pretty crazy lol
Good luck with whatever you choose and keep us in the loop!
