Think I may have mold in my new apartment..how do make sure of it tho?

So I just moved into this new place, however I noticed I am sneezing and have a runny nose every now and then. Also noticed the skin on my hands being super dry and wrinkled (like after you take a bath) I grabbed a towel the other day and when I took it out I could smell a musky odor smell that smelled similiar to my apartment. But it didnt smell fresh kind of musky. Its in an old building and even though everything has been repainted, im suspect that they just painted over mold. I cant visually see any which is frustrating but the popcorn ceiling does have some discoloration which makes it seem like it was painted over. Im going to check the vents tomorow but the one vent looked completely fine after I inspected it. Are there any tests I can do to see if the air has mold particles and if any of my clothing is infected will washing it solve the trick?

There's a popular test called the HERTSMI. You can order from mycometrics. They send you a kit, you collect dust from around your home on a cloth, send it in, they test it and tell you if the molds are harmful or not. Very helpful. I've done it 3 times.

paranoid about sht like that.
have been extremely sick this year with no diagnosis. Moved out of my basement over the possibility of hidden mold being the culprit

if any item has been affected by mold can you clean it or do you have to throw it out

Depends, most things you can clean with bleach and scrub, let them dry and it should be good; some things like wood or drywall it can seep into it and you just need to replace it (cloth items for example).

Based on what you've said I'm going to venture to say someone has painted/covered up some nasty water damage


Not to scare you but mold is common & makes thousands sick every year; start digging around even taking off paint if you have to

If you do find mold & later start having odd breathing issues with no other symptoms request a chest x-ray

If there is mold in the walls it will grow through the paint in a few months. Better to get someone out there to test for it, when they find it, break the lease and request your full deposit back

it also may not be the apartment it may be my stuff..as I had left it in a storage unit for over a year....shiit might have to inspect every item

Pulmonary Aspergillosis can happen, treatment is simply antimycotics

I got that too. I wiped it off but it just grows back. Now I ignore it. It's probably good for strengthening your immune system.

bleach can’t even save that. It needs to be remediated. If it’s a condo or apartment your super screwed. Dry wall needs to be replaced, then treatment spray the wood or replace if rotted, then new insulation, and a dehumidifier and let it air dry out for like 2 weeks and then put up new drywall and most likely your subfloors are fuked too and you need new ones.

i would move out as soon as ur lease is up.

As an update im throwing out all of the clothes that I had left in the storage unit and will be washing the clothes that are in the unit with vinegar and baking soda. This will allow me to determine if its coming from the apartment or the clothes that were left in storage

I know for a fact my comforter had mold on it cuz i was sick driving home with it in my car yet when i go away from it i feel just fine

do you recommend a de-humidifier or an air purifier? any recomendation? Also heard Ozone treatments work well

will check it out ^^ but im worried that the mold has been painted over and/or is behind the walls ! or even coming thru the air vents. Any solution there?

replacing the dry walls, floors and the whole kitchen. It’s a nightmare. I did it on my rental unit. Thank god for insurance. And if there is mold, you can move and break the lease.

Idk if your in Vegas, but here is the law on breaking a lease in Clark county due to the land lord not making request repairs which without those repairs being done, the property is deemed not habitable under “Constructive Eviction”

Figure that **** out. Back in high school I started getting weird breathing problems. Come to find out later on that part of the seal of my trunk door was messed up and rain was filling up the spare tire space in the trunk. The water was seeping through the back seat and into the floor, and I had a crazy science experiment of black mold growing under the floor mats.

na, im in TN where its very humid. Problem is I dont know if the mold was coming from the furniture and clothing that I had left in a storage unit, or if it was coming from the apartment itself. Hard to tell since I cant see any actual mold but it does have a distinct smell when i take a towel out of my apartment and smell it later on.
(these are my opinions i am not a licensed broker by trade)

did the breathing problems go away? I have a super stuffy nose and some sneezing when im in the apartment however whenever I go outside it usually clears up within 30 minutes to an hour.

also had a metallic taste in my mouth which was weird.

have a company come out and test for it. They can tell you the source. They will use a gadget to see if their is moisture in your walls.

Eventually, but it wasn't super long term exposure either. Only while driving.

I lived in an apartment and I walked over by the wall AC unit and the floor was wet, I'm like wtf is this ac leaking for? Condensation was leaking onto the floor and I had no idea it was carpeted. Well I rip up the carpet in that corner and tons of black/green/white mold. I poured rubbing alcohol on it and it all died and never came back. Alerted the management and they swapped the AC unit.

No idea how long it was leaking for, no smell from it. But since I've moved and I keep an eye on windows and got a dehumidifier.
