Why do people want such huge houses/homes?

One of the dumbest aspects of the whole "keeping up with the Joneses" concept is people wanting huge homes. That is, homes that have about twice as much space as they need, if not more.

It seems like many people feel they need a place with like 3 - 4 spare bedrooms they don't use for much, a 3-stall garage minimum, giant shed, etc. One dude I know has a place with all that chit on a couple acres of land, for a family of 4. The guy spends basically all of his time working crazy hours at work and doing house/yard work to maintain the place. I mean, how is that even enjoyable at that point?

Agree. I raised two kids and several pets in a 1950's rancher that's 1,600 square feet. No giant master suite, giant bathrooms, etc.

I much prefer more yard to more house.

Don't need more bedrooms but more space for other chit is good

I want a dedicated theatre room, a nice office space, a sweet home gym, putting green, maybe a basketball court, BDSM dungeon, wine cellar, bar, olympic-sized pool, space for the dogs, and then need a separate wing for the wife's bf

I don't. My house is 3 bedroom, 2 bath and about ~2000 sf and I'm thinking about downsizing. I really like my house though.

I have a 2,071 square foot 3-br house and we're about to add on another 550 square feet, two more bedrooms. I'm gonna make one of the bedrooms a home gym and the other will be a play room for the kids. It will be an amazing investment in the long run.

If money was not a limitation or concern, I would live in the largest building I could. Like this



Sure. Given that I would be living there alone, it is a chronic waste of living space. However, enormous private properties often are poor uses of living space. Even with a family of 12, you could have your sections of the building and hardly ever see each other if you so wished. I would probably rent out sections of the building though, up to 40% even, given that there are many rooms I would not even have need for, once my home cinema, kitchen, bowling alley, home gym, indoor pool, 3-4 bedrooms for visitors, 1-2 bathrooms, bar, dining room, lounge were sorted.

Obviously, you would need a chit hot security system unless you wanted vagrants breaking in and squatting in distant parts of the house.

A very large house only makes sense for regular people [non-wealthy] if they have a big family/multi-generational/entertain a lot.

From experience w/a family of 3 I found:

- 1000 sq. ft. a bit tight
- 2000 sq. ft. we had rooms we didn't really use
- 1400 to 1600 sq. ft. was pretty good- not on top of each other and no unused space

Gonna have three kids and 5,000sqft would be the sweet spot for me. Agree extra bedroom and bathrooms are a waste I’d want a gym, games room, indoor pool with sauna, cinema, the usual.

Better to have too much space than not enough. My wife and I got a great deal on a place last year during the dip but it's just a bit too small. Luckily there's a large yard so I'm putting a big shed in this spring to use for storage.

When you're married the issue isn't even really space, it's how much useless crap your wife will want to keep in storage.

The bigger the house the harder it is to maintain. I can just imagine the difficulties in vacuuming, sweeping, mopping the floors, and cleaning the ceilings and furniture.

Also big house = more space. Its better to have to much, than not enough. Plus larger houses tend to hold value well and are predominantly in areas with other larger houses which keeps property values consistent. As far as cleaning goes, you can hire services that will send bishes out to clean you whole house in like 2 hours while you take a morning chit... lol

The feeling of space is lovely. I'm a Brit though so our houses are tiny compared to 'merica. If you have a family being able to get away from noise of other people doing chit like practising music instruments, watching TV etc. is also great. Large houses often means you are not overlooked by other people all the time or worried about annoying neighbours if you blast music.

My house is about 4800 sq ft on 2 acres.

view out the back on Christmas, it's just an open field behind my yard:


We have 5 bedrooms and 3.75 baths, but then we also have a small home gym and his/her hobby rooms. The hobby rooms give my wife a place to do her scrap booking and me a place to build fishing rods/reload ammo, etc, where we can leave in-progress stuff out and walk away and lock the door without it cluttering up the rest of the house. We built the house 1.5 years ago from a set of plans my wife put together with a designer. It's a bit bigger than we initially intended - I don't think any one thing is grossly overdone - but all the little things add up - hobby rooms, sitting room with piano, larger master shower with dual spray heads (very underrated for couples' time btw). We also have 5 kids, so our needs are bigger than most. We have a huge open play area downstairs for the kids - for Christmas this year I put up a projector/surround sound.

In 3-4 years I'll have kids going away to college, but eventually we will need the space again for family gatherings. The yard is a lot to take care of. We do a big garden.

All-in-all definitely bigger than we need, but it's very comfortable for us. It is a lot to take care of. For now, we have kids to mow the grass and weed the garden. Part of the acreage will just be put into pasture.
