Ruger 10/22 or Winchester wildcat (similar to 10/22 but lighter easier to clean) are great first guns especially if you are new to guns entirely .22 is a great. For 600 I would go 10/22 or similar, a cheap .22 handgun to practice and a hi-point c9 9mm (not a ccw but a cheap effective full sized 9mm) just go get started. That’ll get you 3 guns that are practical. Also you can scrap the cheap .22 pistol in favor of a savage 20 gauge pump shotgun they go for 160 at Walmart. Shotguns are the jack of all trades

Haven't read the rest of the thread.

For personal self defence, I really like the Sig Sauer P365 .380 - I'm not too fond of Glocks. I've seen the plastic casing crack on their magazines, and in general I've just never been impressed with them.

Been awhile since I've looked into handguns, I need to go to the range again.

Edit: I've read the thread now mmmkkkkk

Lot of optic options out there, of course you can just look for some cheap $50 flip irons or get something like a $400 red dot, but that rifle is good to go out of the box and leaves room in your budget for ammo and mags.
Can confirm, the Ruger MPR have multiple porpoises and comes with a bunch of upgrades over the regular. (Trigger, barrel, furniture, etc).
For budget red dot, a $200 HOLOSUN works just fine.

Pre-Covid price was around $600-650, for present day $760 is a dang good price.

Glocks are the most reliable handgun platform on the planet. I have- and I'm serious here- never seen a stock Glock have a malfunction.

They may have it all resolved now with the 365, but Sig USA is a garbage tier company. They basically beta test their guns on the public. The number of people with issues on the early 365's was insane.

A .22 is really not useful for home defense. You need something that will incapacitate a target immediately. 9mm pistol would be a good start. Make sure to get a laser dot, can be accurate and extremely useful in a night time situation. Aiming a gun and hitting a moving target isn't as simple as point and pull when adrenaline hits; a red dot helps compensate for that. Also practice gun safety, you can inadvertently kill yourself or someone else in the blink of an eye if you're not serious enough about it. Haven't seen anyone mention a carbine yet. My next firearm will be a Kel Tec Sub 2000. It is essentially a rifle in 9mm caliber that can fold in half and be placed in a backpack. Great for outdoor and camping "just in case" situations.

I think that both AR-15 and shotguns are very versatile guns. I probably lean more towards ar dude to being able to stock up on ammo and have a higher magazine capacity. Faster to reload as well and better range. I'd say the most important thing is to buy what you can afford and then as much ammo as possible if concerned about a SHTF scenario. Ammo is the expensive part. Currently have a couple thousand rounds but would be more comfortable with 10k rounds. Also both are sufficient hinting weapons too if shtf. Both can kill any big game on north america if you shoot in the head with the AR, obviously a 12ga slug could kill a moose at close range. I prefer the AR for sure due to 300+ yard accuracy. Although shotgun would be better for smaller game. Toss up.

Ideally you want a long gun and a handgun as a side carry.

I've got a Ruger 556 MPR and a Ruger 9mm for self defense. Both very affordable guns and I do like a utilitarian Ruger. Do have other guns up to a savage .338 Lapua. But other than my 7mm rem mag, I couldn't see using a lot of those for self defence. Just not as practical.

Truth. I love the feel of the 365 but what a scum bag company. On top of that their p320 had serious firing pin issues for years. I will never buy a Sig based on principle and the fact they're fckin unreliable. Fck them and I wish they'd go bankrupt.

Glocks do some things really well:

1. Seamlessly transitioning magazines from full size down to subcompact
2. Shoot faster than most comparably priced/sized competitors due to lower bore axis.
3. Fit a larger handgun into a smaller area due to grip angle (which is bothersome for some individuals)
4. Have the best aftermarket support of any handgun on the planet.
5. Run reliably in stock configuration.

They do not have the best triggers, they do not have the best grips, they do not have the best barrels, but they do work every time unless you modify them. Pretty straightforward stuff.

I would take a G48 with the shield mags over a P365.

If I only get one firearm, it would be a 16" AR-15. A suppressed SBR would get a lot of consideration, too, but that's outside your budget. The deal Ike posted looks solid. If I needed to go truly cheap, I'd watch the daily deals on Palmetto State Armory. Right now, there is an AR/shotgun combo for $700.

https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-...un-bundle.html

I'd rather trust my life to the Ruger MPR, but PSA guns generally seem to function well. I'd rather have a PSA than nothing, for sure.

Agreed, I own a Remington 870 police. This is a SBS that is awesome to shoot. Does require tax stamp and waiting for ATF to approve.

For CCW, I have either carried Glocks or Sigs. Currently have Glock 19 and Glock 23 (kept in truck). Glock 19 (9 mm), Glock 23 (40), and Glock 32 (357 sig) can all fit in the same holster. I sold my Glock 32 because I didn't like the 357 sig round. Best I can describe it is "snappy."

Should eventually get some sort of rifle. Your pistol and shotgun won't do you much good if someone comes at you with a rifle.

A shotgun is a terrible choice. It's not 1960 anymore, there are better options if you're not shooting things that fly

So tiring reading that “you dont even have to aim”, just racking it will scare them off, shotguns are great for beginners etc. Low capacity, heavy recoil, pump action requires so much movement and manipulation. They are probably the worst choice for home defense. People have this hollywood perception.

Can’t ignore how versatile it is though. If you had one gun and there was a collapse a shotgun would not be a bad choice. One gun you can kill small game and large game, and defend yourself. Birdshot, buckshot, and slugs give you many options. His post was about a collapse not about carry or just home defense.

It suffers the primary problem of a shotgun which is that the configuration most useful for shooting things in the sky is the least useful for personal protection, and an end-user is simply unlikely to spend enough time with it to become proficient.

I agree with Ike that for the budget you have the Ruger AR556 is the best bet. Get that, some PMAGS, ammo, and if you need a budget optic get a Sig Romeo 5. Obviously not going to be on Trijicon or EoTech level, but it beats iron sights.

My SHTF gun is a Daniel Defense MK18, suppressed. A suppressor is a very overlooked tool for a self defense weapon.
