Is there any proof that this isn’t the greatest scene in cinematic history?
Olorin fought Durin’s Bane, a Balrog of Morgoth, for a week, from the lowest areas in a subterranean lake, and chased him through places where even Nameless Things dwell, up to the highest peak until he threw down his enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside with the help of his sword Glamdring, an ancient Elven-forged blade known as “Foe-Hammer”.
Gandalf (Olorin) was a Maiar, an angelic being similar to this Balrog, but one who took a different form and a different path. Durin’s Bane was very old and powerful and basically ended an entire Dawrven civilization.
Durin’s folk delved too deep.

What gets me about this Series is that the World is in decline. A common trope in many fantasy series, it’s handled very well by Tolkien.
The Elves used to be powerful, Numenorean Men were akin to 7-foot tall superheroes, dwarves had extremely large caches of wealth.
Even the main antagonist, Sauron, is basically a broken Maiar even though he was one of the original servants of Morgoth. Once Numenor fell, he lost most of his power yet still is incredibly strong, even after being defeated by Isildur.
The entire land has been shattered. The world of Men is falling, with no great kings. The realms of Elves only are preserved by Galadriel and her ring. The Dwarves are few in number.
Only through Gandalf’s influence with Narya, the ring of fire, the purity of the Hobbits, and the fact that Aragorn is basically an almost perfect man, were they able to distract Sauron and allow Gollum to take the ring to the fires of Mount Doom.
By the way,
Nobody would have been capable of giving up The One Ring. Perhaps the greatest feat of strength was Bilbo letting go. Boromir was said to have been the mightiest man alive and he was turned into a whimpering child by his desire for it.

Whenever I watch LOTR, I watch them all.
So I always think of LORT as one movie.

Only by the help of Gandalf, aided by the ring Narya, was he able to break the spell and heal King Theoden. Without that, the world would have fallen.
Saruman was weak compared to Sauron. Imagine the ability Sauron had to bend the will of Men.
Even weakened as he was, Sauron wielded terrible power.

Things that you don't even think about until you know their backstory but it sure as hell seems like the actors covey it in their interactions with each other.

Love this speech. It’s the forte of every dictator pushing a revolution. out with the old, in with the new.
“And listen, Gandolf, my old friend and helper“, he said, coming near in speaking now and a softer voice. “I said we, for we it may be, if you will join with me. A new power is rising. Against it the old allies and policies will not avail us at all. There is no hope left in elves or dying Numenor. This then is one choice before you, before us. We may join with that power. It would be wise, Gandulf. There is hope that way. It’s victory is at hand; and there will be rich reward for those that aided it. As the power grows, it’s proved friends will also grow; and the wise, such as you and I, may with patience come at last to direct its courses, to control it. We can bide our time, we can keep our thoughts in our hearts, deploring maybe evils done by the way, but approving the high and ultimate purpose: knowledge, rule, order; all the things that we have so far striven in vain to accomplish, hindered rather than helped by our weak idle friends. There need not be , there would not be, any real change in our design, only in our means.”

“Ride out with me.”
Immediately Theoden is inspired. He knows exactly who Aragorn is. A descendant of Isildur.
Not to mention, Gimli and Legolas are basically legendary warriors as well.
And furthermore, Gandalf’s possession of the ring, Narya, steels the hearts of men and allows him to help them while enduring the long passage of time.
