My best tip is buy it a choker collar before you get it and then go hang yourself with it.

Raise it well, teach it boundaries immediately, solidify its position as the most submissive creature in your household, socialize it to other dogs and ppl immediately. Unsocialized pits can be dangerous as they have that prey instinct.

If it's a pup and you do this, well-raised pits are fantastic dogs. The American Pitbull Terrier is a super versatile dog. It's also amazing with kids, despite all the nonsense you read on this forum.

If it's a rescue adult pit, make sure you know where it comes from. I volunteered in shelters for many years and some of those pitbulls come from such deplorable environments that no amount of love and care can recondition them. At that point, you just need to make concessions, like keep them away from animals if they have dog aggression.

Personally, with all the experience I've gathered, I wouldn't adopt a rescue pit. My dog is only 25% APT and I get the best of that breed with her incredible athleticism and how great she is with little kids and babies.

A 2018 literature review with meta-analysis by breed, focusing on dog bite injuries to the face, head and neck, concluded that "of the cases in which the breed was known, the Pit-bull was responsible for the highest percentage of reported bites across all the studies

Do you really want to get into the statistics? Because they aren’t going to align with your “pittie = nanny dogs” narrative. Not by a long shot. The stats are actually far worse than the 13% of the US population who commit 52% of the crimes.
