Covid ICU story time [vax/novax welcome]
Tldr in next post;
Slow day in the ICU, figured I would mention something that I've noticed happening quite often with certain types of unvaxxed peeps. First off, I don't care if someone is vaxxed or not. Adults should make their own decision and parents should make the decision for their own kids. And no one should be forced.
That being said, this 61 year old fat dude I've got today came in a month ago for difficulty breathing with covid, and ended up on a breathing machine (not vent). Then his breathing got worse as the pneumonia destroyed his lungs, the panic sets in, and he is told the only thing left is intubation.
He was uncooperative the entire time people were trying to help him. Totally clueless about how serious his situation is, then after making his situation worse, absolutely refused to be intubated for several days because he says it is a death sentence. He's not completely wrong either, because only the young survive intubation with covid pneumonia. The problem is if the lungs are damaged beyond a certain point, intubation is the only thing that can be done to get oxygen into the blood. Instead of being informed he relied on conspiracies and thinks there's another way out, but there isn't at that point
He's been here a month now and since then he's been intubated, proned and paralyzed multiple times and is not getting any better. He's going to die along with the other 95% of people intubated with covid pneumonia. He's too old for ECMO so he'll stay in a drug induced coma on the vent until his lungs recover (not likely) or he gets trached, pegged and sent to a nursing home as a vegetable. And that's best case scenario unless his family decides to "pull the plug"
The point I'm trying to make is the denial and lack of knowledge before intubation shows that they didn't look into the facts of this virus before making a decision not to get vaxxed. These are not healthy people like vast majority of you. I don't know why they would risk it but there's no take backs when they end up in the ICU.

- Seeing people die like this day after day sucks

I mean, you’re not wrong op. We all need to do a risk analysis and make the best decision for ourselves. Ppl incapable of seeing that on both sides are dildoes. If you are 60+ and fat, you should probably get the vax.

In reality, the world is varying shades of gray and very nuanced. Vax makes sense for some ppl, not for others.

Negged. Coworker ended up in hospital with similar conditions and age. Refused the vent. Laid prone instead. Fully recovered.
Nurses were mad af and made him chit in a box instead of allowing bathroom.

A statistical analysis of hospital survivals rates early in the pandemic (when people were placed in vents at a much higher frequency) and hospital survival rates now make it clear. Doctors were not suggesting the correct approach and often did harm with overly aggressive intervention.
As to the vaccine issue- you're presuming a lot of things in saying it's silly not to get them. I could give you professional (insurance/disability claim) and personal (employee, parent, friend) experience that make it abundantly clear to me that they aren't "safe and effective". But you'd just dismiss that out of personal bias.

I had an elderly relative with MULTIPLE comorbidities and overweight get covid pneumonia (wtf is covid pneumonia? It's pneumonia) and have to only stay in the hospital like a week, they gave them that oxygen thing they put on your nose and it really helped right away (besides IV medications and stuff), wonder what happened. And that was the original "deadly" covid.

You cry about people dying at the end of your cliff notes, yet you talk down and dehumanize him in the rest of your post.
Is any sort of early treatment provided to those who come in with covid? This should be an apolitical question, as it would apply to those who have taken the covid jabs, and those who have not. How sick was this man when he showed up in the ICU? How many days did he have covid? Are there any antivirals you can give these patients, or had he progressed past that stage?
My friend's stepdad recently died of covid, he was fully vaccinated, and the first thing many people said when they found out is that he should have been vaccinated, in a condescending manner. When they found out he was, they immediately change their tone and say something along the lines of: at least that's all that could have been done. What a ****ing joke.

thats a cool story op. based on your cool anecdote about 1 dumb guy I think the peasant common people should not be able to go on pubmed and form a preliminary understanding of their health. they should have complete faith in you and your judgements. this is the same reason I don't research my car problems before taking it to the mechanic. I am no car-spiracy theorist after all. the mechanic is a good guy and they have a great track record of honesty and no corruption. they have that in common with public health officials I suppose.

First of all its questionable that that OP is indeed an ICU doctor i dont know maybe a spoon pic of doctor badge or something else would easily prove it. But for the sake of this post lets assume that op indeed is a ICU doctor. Join date 2021, posts less than 100 most likely a troll.
Doctors are suppose to do everything in their power to save the patient so did you give the patient monoclonal antibodies ? Did you give him ivermectin before it got so bad ? Probably not because the western medicine shuns anything that does not include big pharma vaccines despite plenty of evidence that those things help.

1) Anything other than vaccine is not sciance
2) When person dies from covid and is vaccinated oh well it happens but when person dies and was not vaxxed oh hurr durr if only he/she was vaccinated where the **** is the logic
3) My sister , brother in law, his father and mother all got covid 6 months ago (delta variant). All unvaxxed. His dad and mom pushing 80's both very bad health i was sure they would die considering they both been rushed in an ambulance for various medical issues just few months prior to this. His Dad has issues with diabetes and his mom has had multiple strokes over weight takes like 10-15 pills daily.
Guess what all of them survived with mild cold like symptoms.
My conclusion to covid is this you get covid you have very small chance of dying ... there is 0 evidence that vaccine does anything in fact all evidence points to the vaccine being completely fukkin useless if you compare number of infections / deaths prior to vaccine being available and now there is no decline in either in fact it has gotten worse.
