has anyone else’s perspective on fitness changed

as they get older? only turning 30 but all these years cared about heavy lifting, 5 day splits, IIFYM, etc

now..I just care more about BJJ, yoga/pilates, cardio, eating healthy and lifting maybe 1-2x week.

Not really. If anything I'm definitely spending more time stretching and doing corrective exercises, more effort in joint health and whatnot. Not because of any injuries but just because I feel better all around doing them. Checking my ego, etc

Definitely feel you on this. These days I really only do lifts that will help my BJJ/compound lifts. It's mostly turkish get-ups, deadlifts, squats, pull-ups, and some dumbbell chest exercises, with a lot of emphasis on core strength and core activation. Also lots of stretching. I've always wanted to incorporate regular yoga/pilates into my routine but kinda feeling like I'm at my productivity limit right now due to being in law school and having to dedicate tons of time to that, as well as normal chit like hanging with the boys and the gf and the fam. But yeah, lifting is mostly just a side dish instead of a main course these days.

100%! I have been finding as I get older that every time I "push" myself with the weights I end up injured. Groin issue, rotator cuff, bicep strain and so on. So I've given up weights and switched to yoga, which I am really enjoying so far. I have also taken up jogging and it is a great stress relieve. It's time to start managing my body for the longevity as opposed to gains. Focusing on getting the bf% down, eating healthy and cutting back on the booze. I haven't felt this good in years.

you’re missing out especially if you do BJJ as well

ever since I started yoga/pilates 3-5x a week I have noticed such a difference in BJJ..better shrimping, bridging, guard retention etc

I definitely changed from a "Gotta get as big and lean as possible. Workout everyday, #nopainnogain" mentality to a "Gotta look musclar and lean, but thats not my first priority."

So yes. But I still workout 4-5x a week.

i'm 42 and been lifting off and on for over 20 years. my perspective has definitely changed. I used to be about getting swole, lift some heavy ass weight and look jacked. now my goals are to be healthy. basically build muscle, stay lean, no more ego lifts, dont try to keep up with the young bucks, and most of all, stay injury free. i've had too many surgeries and my body feels like its falling a part, so those heavy lifts arent worth it anymore

Damn I guess I need to get on it then! I've always known it helps but I didn't know how drastic it would be, and those are all things I need since I'm generally a guard player lol. Do you do it in a class scenario? Or just at home?

I much prefer calisthenics/athletic training.

I had a blast doing the Athlean X 12 week program.

When I was growing up my karate sensei was big into calisthenics and was one of the most aesthetic kunts I had ever met in terms of body. For me the calisthenics/athletic style training made me feel way better than lifting heavy ever did.

as I get older I saw the importance of lifting heavy consistently.

the last few years I have seen a need to work on speed but that is because I want to win a strongman comp

No I still lift and run the same routines I always have. The only thing that's changed is I do more cardio now.

Yeah I’m doing bjj as well and that’s the priority now, lifting is kind of stupid after you peak at a certain point as a natty

So flexibility/core/knee strength (general injury prevention) is the focus when lifting, but I still do my favorite heavy exercises like bench/ohp/pull-ups.

I regret not doing this in my early 20s as you can still make the natty lifting progression with low frequency, and the added cardio fitness and useful skills you learn from martial arts is far superior. Also wish I had been introduced to grappling as a teen.

I’ll see how the next decade goes and then hopefully look to extend it with orange juice

Always been the same. I cared about performance instead of aesthetics and still do

I was lucky to have good genetics though otherwise I'd probably care about improving aesthetics

I bench more now than I've ever benched, but that's probably about it. The rest of my workout is kind of just trying to exhaust the muscle and get out.

I think I workout smarter now than I did in my 20's when my life revolved around the gym and I lived and died by how I looked.

When I think I look like chit, the average girl/person thinks I'm in great shape.

Body dysmorphia is a super real thing. I think cardio is more important than lifting because of the health benefits. It feels great to have a penis (no homo) that works 100% of the time, and I think cardio plays a big role in that. Overall physical activity is important to stay young.
